Where were they living in 1861?

Where was each of them born…and when?

Did you get the woman’s maiden name from a child’s birth registration?

Marcus

Marcus Report 6 May 2025 18:43

Thanks ErikaH

William Brigham b 1826 Fenwick, Northumberland
Margaret White b 1833 Barelees, Nr Berwick , Northumberland

I got the maiden name from childrens registration on GRO site.

In 1861 Census, they were living in Chatton, Northumberland, above couple with daughter Margaret aged 1 yar old.

1871 they were in Belford, now with 5 children.

So, very much the north of Northumberland…….

Have you considered the possibility of a marriage in Scotland?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 May 2025 18:52

They didn't marry in Scotland.

In fact, it appears that they didn't marry at all.

Marcus

Marcus Report 6 May 2025 18:54

Yes, very much the northern reaches of England !

As for Scottish marriage, it's possible. I don't have access to Scottish records at present. I just presumed it was somewhere in Northumberland....

See my post above.

Thanks ArgyllGran, just got it!! :-D

If they didn't marry, that makes sense why I am having trouble finding it.

Perhaps one of them was married to someone else………………….

BTW, everyone can look at Scottish records on Scotland’s People website

I looked up Margaret's GRO entry, she is on page 291, the previous entry to George who is on page 292 ! Both are September 1859.

So, possibly twins??

Correction from me about census..... -
1851 William Brigham living in Chatton as Lodger aged 24, single

1861 & 1871 William 34 & Margaret 28, now living in Belford, as a couple (Presumed married) ?

1881 onwards, Family now in Gateshead, Co. Durham.

William states he is from Fenwick area, Margaret is from Barelees or Scremerston Hill nr Berwick.

Apologies should get my facts correct to start with.

The Brigham & White families seem to be rather numerous in the area...!!

Order the cert of the marriage posted by greyghost……..I think you can include both names on the form. Easily checked on the GRO site

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 6 May 2025 20:46

1841 William is with family on Holy Island

Thank ErikahH, the baptism entry for William looks good.

I will try ordering the marriage cert soon, to see who is who etc....

The only Brigham bridegroom's marriage registered in Berwick in Sep qr 1861:

Marriages Sep 1861 (>99%)
Brigham George Berwick 10b 453

Perhaps the different page number is just a clerk's mistake on the handwritten Index?
But William using his father's name George . . . ?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 7 May 2025 08:57

Freebmd shows five names with the vol 10b and page number 453 - clearly this cannot be accurate - your supposition AG is certainly feasible..
