Find Ancestors

Hi all I am new to all of this and very excited to start. My dad can’t remember a lot of names and dates.
His father william died in loanhead Midlothian Scotland 15th April 1972.
My grandmother was called Mary tennant she was adopted so I don’t hold out much hope of finding out a lot about her family.
I would like to find Williams siblings and parents. I know that William was a miner. My dad thinks his father’s name was George and mother Elizabeth. And that they went to Scotland from Ireland.

She had a Sister Emily Grainger the wife of James. She died 2 Nov 1988 aged 80.

If you register with Scotland People, and buy credits (£7.50 for 30 credits) you can view the image of the original marriage cert (cost 6 credits). That will tell you William's parents' names. .
It probably won't give you much info about Mary, as she was adopted.

Then you can search for his parents' marriage, and work backwards from there.

It seems to have been a thread you started yourself, even though you say you have just started researching.
You must have had a previous GR account. Clicking on "Lexi" 's name in green brings up Helen's name.

You already knew about Mary's birth at that time.

However, today's thread is about William.
As said, you need his marriage cert to find out his parents' names.
The births of nine children named William Montgomery, with no middle name, were registered in Scotland 1904-5.

Go to Scotland’s People website and buy credits so that you can look at the 1932 marriage cert.
You will than have info about the previous generation which will be a basis on which to work backwards

The best piece of advice I can give to a newbie researcher is not to take any information that someone gives you or that you find on a family tree anywhere as gospel truth, not even that given on here by these excellent helpers.

Take the information as a starting point, and find proof of everything you have been told.

Work back slowly, buy as many birth, marriage and death certificates as you can afford, otherwise you are very likely to find yourself following a wrong track. We've all done it at one time or another!
