I am looking for a birth record and mother's name of the above person.
I have her marriage record, married in 1878 aged 18, so her birth is around 1860 in Congleton according to census notes.
Her father was Robert Cheshyre (Cheshire) Whiteway, deceased at the time of her marriage.
Spouse was William MacMurray (McMurray).
Robert Whiteway seemed to have at least two wives, Ann Johnson (b1826 to d1857 I think).
Then Mary Shaw.
People on Ancestry are putting Mary Shaw as Mary Cheshyre Whiteway's mother but I am not quite so sure.
If I can find a birth record I will order it.
I would be grateful if anyone can come up with some help on this one for me please.
Carole

Thank you Shirley.
Yes, what you have found is what I have seen too. The 1870 marriage is what made me want to look deeper. I thought if I had the birth record that would help. I have tried all sorts of variations of name in freebmd. I haven’t tried gro.
I have the marriage cert so that has been a good base for me to start from.

Thank you Shirley.
So do you think Mary “Shaw” is Mary Cheshyre Whiteway’s mother? Am I thinking too deeply?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 3 Oct 2020 09:37

If the son, born 1854 had MMN Johnson, and the ‘father’ was a widower in 1861, the mother was Ann, nee Johnson who died in 1857, who couldn’t be the mother of Mary. There is no Identifiable record anywhere of the child Mary with the surname Whiteway before her marriage
Could she have been Mary Shaw’s illegitimate daughter?

I think she is Mary shaw

Can’t see them on the census together until after she remarried Charles Bryan

Mary whiteway had married before the 1881 census

Reginald does give his dad as Robert Cheshire whiteway when he married

The children were the illegitimate children of Mary shaw and Robert

Thank you Shirley and ErikaH.
Sorry, I just wrote a reply and lost it!
I did see the baptism records but didn’t put together there were no birth records. I didn’t check for the other siblings.
I had thought the children could have been illegitimate but wanted to confirm with a record.
Thank you so much for your help.
Regards, Carole
