Hi everyone,
I'm looking into my maternal great grandfather- Albert Wagstaff of Hepworth, Yorkshire. b.1870 m.02/06/1894 aged 24 to Hannah Battye of Shepley, Yorkshire aged 24. I have a lot of info on the Wagstaff's BUT my dilema is that when I got a copy of Alberts marriage cert I was surprised to read it has "John Webster" cattle dealer as his father and not "John Wagstaff" Inn keeper as I was expecting. He has 6 other siblings and is next to the youngest so i don't think it's possible he's from a previous relationship. In the Index i think I've found the right Albert Wagstaffe reg. 1870 2nd quarter in Huddersfield obviously no parents are mentioned. Could anyone shed any light as I'm wondering if I have the wrong family altogether & whether the family bloodline should be webster? Many thanks in advance all you helpful people.

Thanks for your reply but I already have the 1881 census with these details. It's the marriage cert that's thrown me with the name, John Webster as Alberts father?!

We know you do, it's just easier for people to help if we have a picture of the family.
I see his mother did not re-marry. It's something of a puzzle isn't it! I wonder what has been put onn his siblings' marriage certs = possibly it was just an error\?

I also have Alberts father's date of death as 1884 and am not aware she remarried.

Moody Blue Report 5 Nov 2012 18:24

His father in 1881 occupation was:-

Farmer Of 14 Acres And Licensed Victualler ( so not just an Inn Keeper) and in 1891 his brother Isaac was a Cattle dealer so it is an occupation within the Wagstaff family. maybe as brummiejan has suggested, it may be an error.....perhaps by the clerk who filled in the register etc.

Yes i wondered too if it was an error on the m cert. I was thinking of checking up on his siblings m certs to see whether they matched alberts.

Well spotted Moody Blue.
Just out of interest who were the witnesses? No chance of a mix-up there?
It does sound very much like an error.

Everything points to it being an error!!

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 5 Nov 2012 18:48

I thought it might be his older bro' Issac as a m. witness and it's a match with Issac's wife Clara. Didn't have her surname so cheers for that. To be sure am going to work through all the siblings and if it's Wagstaff all the way I'll assume it's an error.
Any ideas on how to get hold of his original birth cert or entry which should have his parents names?
