William Gimlett married 3 times: He was widowed in 1851, then Mary, then Margaret. This might not help in finding the connection, but you need to find all the marriages, siblings, parents, to see if there is a loose connection somewhere.
How can you be sure that the first marriage was childless - any children could be living with her parents in 1851? e.g. Births Jun 1847 GIMLETT William Abergavenny 26 18 GIMLETT William Abergavenny 26 48 Births Dec 1848 Gimlett Mary Ann Abergavenny 26 13 Births Dec 1850 GIMLET Eleanor Abergavenny 26 20
Because of the large number of deaths and remarriages I think you need a large sheet of paper and to work your way through all the permutations.

You may need to consider that these two children were in no way related to Towne - their descriptions as nephew and niece may simply have been terms of affection - in fact as he later married the girl, they couldn't have been related, unless he was a law-breaker
