Christina - brill thanks. When I was trying to resist pre-empting things I did find this family straight away so I think it's right too. And Mary the widow looks good as well.

Mike - yes I think that's the GRO birth - it's the one that MC plumped for at the start of the thread when I had started out with the wrong Mary (in the marriage)

My guess would be that you're right with the family you've followed on the 1861 and 1881 censuses. Even though their ages differ. Also, Mary Williams, living with her brother, John, on the 1891 looks right.

This looks like the mother in 1891:

Mary A. Williams - widow - 65 - work in fields - St. Stephens
Alfred J. Williams - grandson - 10 - St. Austell

On the 1881 census Mary Williams' sister, Louisa, is in the St. Austell District Workhouse with one week old Alfred Williams.

Well here we are seemingly ages later.....I sent for the certificate on Monday 21st and it has arrived today. It has been a huge temptation to pre-empt things but I managed it....so Christina S and MC...Mary Williams it is. MC currently having your wagered glass (or two :-)....

So Mary is 21 years old on the wedding day of 18 January 1892. Father is John Williams Farm Labourer. Living at Churchtown, St Stephens in Branwell.

Mary was a domestic servant at time of marriage. Witnesses were Grace Williams and Emmeline Kent.

I'm glad in a way because in "Hancock" research I found a will in 1928 of £39000 and wondered why none of it had filtered down to my hubby ha ha :-)

Hmm, there doesn't seem to be a Mary b 1869 with the family in earlier census.

The images for the Cornwall parish registers are available to view on FamilySearch, can't search by name - have to flick through images.

Might be worth a look on there.

And on 1901 - Richard's Mary is 'Mary E' which again suggests the 'Hancock' one !

On the 1891 census Richard Philp (the other groom) is a visitor at the house where Mary Hancock is living.

Yes MC..... this is the Mary Hancock I plumped for...

Yes that's them in 1901 and 1911. I will send for the marriage certificate just thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts while I am waiting for it. There are no clues in any of the children's names to point to either maternal lineage (damned inconsiderate of them I have to say) :-)

Having looked back in the 1881, none of the Mary Hancocks that fit have St Stephen as their birthplace, whereas there is a Mary Williams that does.

Is this them 1901?
