anyone know about a Henry Hickmott born Sussex/Kent about 1826 father John Hickmott occupation Sawyer.
Henry a Police Constable in 1851 by 1855 moved to 47 Guildford Street St Pancras where son Stephen was born. Seems to have remarried an Elizabeth Bridger nee Brook in 1852 a widow who's father may have been a Samuel Wanmer. Henry was born Broughton/ Brighton (not well readable on census) as on census he had 2 sons Stephen Henry 1855 and Walter George 1859.

Is there a Brighton in Middlesex? I had got to these but 1841 census the only henry I can find is with a Jane Hickmott and Elizabeth Taylor aged 70. On his marriage cert to Elizabeth it says father John occ Sawyer

Hi yes these are henry's sons so I have been trying to find out why he's his brother in law as his brother Walter isn't married.
Henry and Elizabeth seemed to have died at the same time.

1861 actually says Sussex Brighton. I have put in a correction.

So is there a way to find out who Henrys father John was married to as I have a John on my tree but it maybe wrong one now. Or Henrys birth to find his mothers name, as I think it may be a Jane Goad?

Right Stephens birth cert it says mother Elizabeth nee Brook, so she must have died so he married a Jane Goad, she died he married Elizabeth Bridger who seems to be daughter of Samuel Wanmer.
So maybe his mother was an Jane Taylor before marrying John Hickmott as she and Henry are living with an Elizabeth Taylor in 1841 AS Jane is a widow.

William and John must be children of Elizabeth Bridger by her first husband.

"Brother-in-law" in this case means stepbrother.


At that time, you often see "son-in-law" or daughter-in-law" on censuses ........... the meaning today would be stepson or stepdaughter.

Hi yes SylviaInCanada this is the marriage I found, so Henry married twice after Stephen's mother died so Elizabeth who died with Henry was Stephens step mother.

In fact, Elizabeth who died with Henry was Stephen's second step-mother!
