In 1841 census found a John 45 occp Sawyer with Ann 55 with a Jane Hickmott (maybe daughter in law) aged 20 and what seems to be her daughter Sophie 9 months. In St Bartholemew but can't work out place.

This is that family in 1851 so you can rule them out. Everyone who has them on their tree has made a mistake.

That's the John I have with Patience but it must be the wrong John, so looking at Jane Hickmott widow maybe living with her mother after being widowed. I am now on the search who Henry's father John is and find his mothers full identity.
Thanks for all the help as this has been hard to work out.
My married name is Hickmott but my ancestor Christopher Dive in 1659 married a Judith Hickmott in Cranbrook so we think we must have a link because his family were from Kent.

In fact, Elizabeth who died with Henry was Stephen's second step-mother!

"Brother-in-law" in this case means stepbrother.


At that time, you often see "son-in-law" or daughter-in-law" on censuses ........... the meaning today would be stepson or stepdaughter.

Right Stephens birth cert it says mother Elizabeth nee Brook, so she must have died so he married a Jane Goad, she died he married Elizabeth Bridger who seems to be daughter of Samuel Wanmer.
So maybe his mother was an Jane Taylor before marrying John Hickmott as she and Henry are living with an Elizabeth Taylor in 1841 AS Jane is a widow.

So is there a way to find out who Henrys father John was married to as I have a John on my tree but it maybe wrong one now. Or Henrys birth to find his mothers name, as I think it may be a Jane Goad?

Hi yes these are henry's sons so I have been trying to find out why he's his brother in law as his brother Walter isn't married.
Henry and Elizabeth seemed to have died at the same time.
