Hi Helpers,
I am searching Mabel Kathleen Firth b c1912 d1976.
Her daughter (still alive) knows nothing of where her mother Mabel was born or lived.
Mabel was an orphan, her words to her daughter.
She married (age 28) Charles Hadlow 1940 Camberwell/Peckham (have cert.) and it shows no father on it, they lived remainder of life in Newington area.
The only Mabel Kathleen I can find is on 1911 census Dewsbury b1908 but she married J Kemp 1933 so is wrong.
My questions are=
Where do I go from here.
Do I assume her parents died making her an orphan.
Do I assume Firth was her surname or maybe an adopted name, was it her unknown fathers name or mothers name.
Where would I find orphanages records.
There are a number of Mabel Firth (minus Kathleen) similar birth years but where do I start.
Genealogy has been my hobby for many years and can't give up on this one so please help if you can.
Kind Regards
Les.

'Orphan' means that both parents have died. That is simply the definition of the word - it does not necessarily mean that she was placed in an orphanage

Mabel Kathleen Firth is the name by which she knew herself - and could be from any source.

Legal adoption didn't come into force until the mid-1920's, so any arrangement prior to that would have been informal

Who witnessed her marriage?

from 1933 to 1936 she was in an Asylum (Peckham House), Camberwell

there might well be some records available

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1847-1965

Name: Mabel Kathleen Firth
Electoral Year: 1933
Parliamentary Division: Camberwell
County or Borough: Southwark

In 1938 she was at 74 Lyndhurst Road, Camberwell with the following residents -

Frederick and Lilian Pearce
Robert and Eleanor Storey
Edward and May Tagg

no sign of her before 1933 on Electoral register, so likely that 1912 birth year is correct (think 21 was the age to appear on the ER)

Not much help on Mabels birth I know ( I was wondering the same as Mike, about Scotland or Ireland )

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1847-1965
about Mabel K Hadlow
Name: Mabel K Hadlow
Electoral Year: 1946
Parliamentary Division: Camberwell
County or Borough: Southwark

Address 34 Willowbrook Road

Same address

Charles F Hadlow
Jane E
John F
Mabel K (as above)
William

and

Benjamin Ryan

--------------------------------------

Witness on marriage cert was Lydia Ryan

Wonder if this is her marriage ???

Marriages Mar 1917

>>>>Hadlow Lydia Ryan Camberwell 1d 1057
>>>>Ryan Benjamin Hadlow Camberwell 1d 1057

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It looks as if Lydia was Charles' sister going by 1911 census for Lydia ---Charles F birth in 1912 and their parents marriage in 1894.

Hi Babara
Thank you for the electoral register with lots of goodies within.
It's 100% correct, the same address as on m cert.
I guess I will search Ireland and Scotland for her birth, or maybe in a day or so my post will be read by a researcher from these parts.
Thanks again

Only 2 of the 5 Firth births in Scotland in 1912 were female. A Frances born in Renfrew and a Daisy in Orkney.

Thank you rootgatherer. I guess we can out rule them then ---

Trying a different tack. If she was born with a different surname (but same area as she appears on ER).

These were all born at the correct quarter in that area and reg Jun 1912

Cranham Mabel K Nicol Wandsworth 1d 984
The above marries in 1937 so can be eliminated

Herbert Mabel K Day Camberwell 1d 1720
Looks like this one may have married in 1937 too.

Jay Mabel K Wells Kingston 2a 846
Marries in 1932

Morriss Mabel K Denman Lambeth 1d 485
Marries in 1939

Webb Mabel K Taylor Lambeth 1d 664
Possible death in 1914.

Not seeing a birth on the familysearch Irish indexes either.
