Well done Dee...why didn't we think of it being a Stage name before! Actresses eh???:-(

I don't blame you!!! I would be intrigued too!. In fact I am...

I haven't found any children born to them Maureen. But I could be wrong??

When I was looking through The Stage, Ella adds to the paper around the anniversary of her mothers death about 3 or 4 times, each time she just mentions herself in the (word escapes me) memorials........ sounds like she thought the world of her mother.

Looks like Ella was on stage for quite a few years. so maybe children would have got in the way of their professional lives?

Ella was at 13 Talfourd Road until about 1939........ I'm wondering if they owned the house?

More intrigued about Ella now then ever.

Did "Harry" and Ella actually have a child?? On the 1911 Harry says that there is one. (not that I'd really believe this bunch....).

Thank you Maureen.

And......... I think I may have found Ella's husband. He was Alfred Henry Davis, also a Musical Hall Artiste. The Stage has a death for him, apparently he was a Comedian and went by the name of Harry Daniels, I finks this is him;

1911 England Census
about Harry Daniels Name: Harry Daniels
Age in 1911: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Relation to Head: Boarder
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
Civil parish: South Shields
County/Island: Durham
Country: England
Street Address: 4 Hadrian Terrace South Shields
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Comedian
Registration district: South Shields
Registration District Number: 556
Sub-registration district: South Shields
ED, institution, or vessel: 20
Piece: 30279
Household Members: Name Age
Alice Jackson 56
Eleanor Hunter Hinellagh 30
Hannah Metcay 40
Harry Roxbury 41
Harry Daniels 29

His father was George Davis (builder on marriage cert) and I've found a Alfred with father George in Bristol and he's a Stone Mason........ so it looks like a strong possible.

I can't quite beleive that I've found them.

Well done Dee!! I am so pleased for you.

As you say, never give up. They certainly didn't make it easy for you, did they!

But I bet you feel really elated just now just because they were so hard to find.

All the best, Liz

Ok.......... unbelievable but true!!! Phyllis Stuart IS Ella Bangham.

Just looked on the Stage Archive and guess what....... there she is;

"ANDERSON

To the glorious memory of Marie Anderson, who died 23rd August 1939, adored mother of Phyllis Stuart"

So Phyllis was her "show" name.

I'm flabbergasted......... I never thouht Iwould solve this, I've been looking for a few years now and in 1 day it all falls into place.

Never give up........ we can find them!!!!

alviegal

alviegal Report 18 Jan 2012 19:48

That census certainly looks promising. Phyllis is actually 17 on it not 19. Can't find any other mention of her anywhere.
Why, oh why, did they keep changing their names and ages? I'm sure there's a story in there somewhere if only someone knew it. Shame you'll probably never know it now.

yes...you have a real conundrum here!

maybe one of those things you will never prove...but Ella = Phyllis - uuuHHHH??? You could understand Bella...but Phyllis? and wheredoes Stuart come from/

aaaghhh :-P

Hi Jude,

Daughter in law was also used instead of stepdaughter.

Those Jagger girls liked those Anderson boys and they liked to fib about their age too... naughty ladies!!!

A pleasing enigma... :-)

How annoying, three sisters with almost identical names! And they all seem to have married an Anderson!!The 1911 census for Ella is a mistranscription..it is Davis without a doubt.

1901 - how can Phyllis be a daughter-in-law if she is single :-S

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 18 Jan 2012 17:49

He was there until 1915......... thank you London Electoral Registers.

I know I may never prove that Phyllis was Ella...... can I ask for your thoughts please.

A well pleased Dee xx

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 18 Jan 2012 17:44

BINGO!!!!!!!

1913 William Frank Anderson is living at 13 Talfourd Road!!!

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 18 Jan 2012 17:34

OK......... so thinking aloud.

William Frank Anderson was the brother of Walter Anderson who married Maria's sister Marian.... so I'm now thinking that the 1901 census is looking more promising. I think Phyllis Stuart maybe Ella Bangham!!

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 18 Jan 2012 15:41

Thank you Liz for having a look for me.

I've been toying with this family;

1901 England Census
about Maria Anderson Name: Maria Anderson
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1863
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William F Anderson
Gender: Female
Where born: Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, England

Civil parish: Lewisham
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street Address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Education:

Employment status: View image

Registration district: Lewisham
Sub-registration district: Sydenham
ED, institution, or vessel: 14
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 130
Piece: 558
Folio: 96
Page Number: 18
Household Members: Name Age
William F Anderson 40 Born Warwick, Warwickshire. Occupation; Vet. Surgeon
Maria Anderson 38
Phyllis Stuart 19 Born Birmingham, Warwickshire

Now it seems that William married someone else in 1889... he is not with her in 1891 (found him) neither can I find a Phyllis ( or other abrevs.) to fit in 1911.

So now I'm wondering if this is them??

My theory maybe way off, but at the mo it's all I've got.

No, I'm sorry. I have to join the long list of everyone else who is stumped by this. Perhaps they had both gone to Europe in 1901.

This appears to be the 1901 Matilda in 1911. Her year of birth is consistent in all census records. She was married to a William.
