Can any one sort out this
I have a Elizabeth Stoneham b 1803 at Southfleet Kent
In the 1851 census she is the wife of Joseph Green (my Gt Gt Grandfather)
There are 3 Women there to Emma Green b1843abt (daughter) Elizabeth Stenham b1833 and Letitia Stenham b 1839abt, these 2 are down as daughter in laws, which i dont think is possible as Joseph was born in 1813
I have found a marriage of a Elizabeth Stoneham to a William Carver in 1822 at Stone By Dartford Kent, and i have found Elizabeth Stenham birth from parish records at Bexley Kent, there she is the daughter of William/Elizabeth Carver,
In 1861 census she and Letitia are now Greens
I have not yet found a marriage for Joseph
Does all this sound possible? or does any one else know where to look for Joseph"s marriage.
Have tryed Medway City ark to no avail

can me the same as ''daughters in the eyes of the law''

ie
Girls that lives with them and they treat as daughters

Where were the Stenham girls born?

Clearly, Elizabeth and Letitia are Joseph's stepdaughters.........thus they are Elizabeth's daughters.....either from a first marriage........or illegitimate

Daughter in law was commonly used in those times instead of step-daughter

just had a thought i coiuld get Letitia birh cert that would show for sure who her father was

As i said Elizabeth father was a William Carver so she was not illegitimate , so birth cert needed for Letitia that shoud solve the problem

OK.......you're forgiven!

IF, as you say, Elizabeth jnr was born a Carver, why would she be 'Stoneham' on 1841 and 1851 censuses? Doesn't make sense..............

And Letitia must have been illegit..............to be registered as Stoneham......unless you have the wrong info about the mother, and her maiden name was NOT Stoneham...........and she in fact married a Stoneham...................

That was why I suggested that Letitia's birth cert could be useful

I think mother Elizabeth was NOT born a Stoneham.


If we can ever find the marriage .... I think you will find that she is shown as Widowed


OR else, she and Joseph Green did not marry legally, just lived together common-law.


So, Letitia's birth certificate could well answer all the questions.



I do note that on the 1841 Census, Elizabeth and Letitia are apparently living in the same house as John Smeed and his apparent wife Elizabeth, with a seeming daughter Eliza
