Hi

Yesterday i posted a query about a baptism of my grandfather which was found very quickly. I was hoping someone could help me with this.

Thomas Alfred Longhurst is my grandfather he was born in 1894 in Fawkham in Kent. His father was Thomas and his Mother was Emma.
I have found the family on the 1901 census but cannot find a marriage for the couple anywhere!
I have ordered the birth certificate of my grandfather which will show Emma's maiden name but i was interested in why i can't find a marriage.

PS. Thomas dies in 1901 and i have found Emma and the children (2 after Thomas's death) living in West Malling on the 1911 census.

Hello Derek, you should add this request to your original thread, rather than start a new one - that way information which is pertinent for cross referencing is all in one place.

If you go to "My Thread Participation" on the left you will find it. I'll also nudge it up for you.

I found that marriage but according to the census's Emma was born in 1865 so she wouldn't have been old enough

Was Emma born in Hadlow on the 1911?

Derek

Derek Report 26 Feb 2011 19:49

Yes, Emma was born in Hadlow in 1868 on the 1911 census. Thomas had already died in 1901 but two other children of hers are present on the census who where born after his death.
Strange why there are no marriages for Thomas and Emma though (apart from the one in 1876)

An update on the info i have on the couple!!

I received Thomas Alfred Longhurst birth certifcate today. It says he was born in 1894 in Fawkham. His father Thomas was a Wagoner and his mother names was late Brady formerly Diprose. I found the marriage for John Thomas Brady and Emma Diprose in 1886. On the 1891 census Emma is living with her mother and son John Brady but her husband is not present even though it states she is married.
I still can't find a marriage for Thomas Longhurst and Emma!!!

I know, it's all a bit strange. Also not been able to find Thomas Longhurst before 1901 makes it harder. I know he was a coachman/wagoner and Domestic gardener (from birth a baptism records) and that he was born in Hadlow but there seems to be only 1 Thomas Longhurst who was born there (who is married to Sarah Ann on the 1901 census). Whats strange is the other Thomas Longhurst was a coachman and domestic gardener as well!

Do you have Thomas' death certificate? Or is Emma describing herself as a widow?

Maybe they were living together and he was still married to Sarah Ann? Stranger things have happened.

Might be worth seeing if you can find out more about the Thomas Longhurst who was married to Sarah Ann. One of their ancestors might be able to help.

Well, there's a tree with some of these names on Ancestry. BUT it has the family going backwards and forwards to Idaho and Kent for most of the 19th century which I think is probably not that likely.

That tree shows Emma as Emma Brough with a marriage in Salt Lake City ...

From what i have found i have only managed to find one death registration from Thomas Longhurst (died in 1901, born 1854). But shouldn't i be able to find 2? I've looked at all the ages can't find anymore deaths registered for anyone born circa 1854. I know Emma says she's widowed on the 1911 census but strangley shes got 2 children Violet in 1905 and James circa 1908 with her. Very odd!!!

Do you have the death cert. for Thomas Longhurst who died 1901?...

If not I think you need to order it to confirm that it is in fact "your" Thomas..

There is a Thomas longhurst {age unknown} leaving Liverpool in 1909 for New york..wife is initial E. and there is an M longhurst 21 year old Spinster with them....wonder if this is the family that was referreed to earlier? ........ Emma nee Brough?

Derek Report 6 Mar 2011 18:07

It looks like you're right. I suppose the marriage of Thomas and Sarah Ann Sparks would confirm the father of Thomas which would help me identify which Thomas is mine.
Emma and son Thomas (my grandfather) are still in England in 1911 so it wasn't them that went to America.
I don't have the death certificate yet but looks like it's gonna have to be my next purchase.
