Coleman Street in 1881 was a rabbit warren of Courts each containing several houses some of them "Back" houses. Back houses were very common in Birmingham right up until the 1950's. Basically a back house is a single dwelling which is divided into two with one set of occupants living in the front portion whilst another occupies the rear. |
