Hi Shona

Unfortunately I haven't got a father or siblings for him, only children, so I'm not sure where to place him on my tree.

Hello Shona,

As well as sending Margaret a message, you can also try putting the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above (in the dark green box) to see if anyone else on this site has them in their tree.

If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner.

Meanwhile, if you would like help with your research, why not start a thread of your own? Take a look at the Help Clinic - above left - for further advice. Cx.

Thanks for your information about Mary Wilkinson. I shall follow it up.
how do they connect to your tree?

Sorry I've only just noticed your post.

I have Christopher Tate & Ann Crossland on my tree with just John as father , no date. Notes say that the baptismal record of Christopher Tate said son of John, gardener of Skircoat and Mary and I had an educated guess that Mary might have been Mary Wilkinson b1799. I do recall somebody telling me that one of the Tates committed suicide and was reputed to be a drunkard.

My John of Skircoat 1757-1809 married Elizabeth Tillotson and their children were born in Holme in Cliviger, Lancs. The family eventually moved back to the Skircoat area between 1796 and 1841.

Regarding Tates of Ellland - I have a John William Tate born Skircoat Halifax 1796. He committed suicide on Xmas day 1852 in Lower Shore Calderbrook Lancs. He had 8 children including Christopher 1821-1891 who settled in Elland. He married Ann Crossland and one of his son's married Leah Selina Utley. Iam trying to trace John William's father. Could he be John 1794 or a son of John Tate 1757. Alice, Priscilla,
Hannah and John seem to be family names in my tree.
Regards
Shona

Hi Margaret
Just wondering if there are two Alice and Abigail.
I have just drawn a little tree from the information you posted. If I have understood it correctly .....James and Mary Tate the original parents.....followed by their 3 children John, James and William Tate1713-1806. Also, but later there is his(William) wife Hannah born 1714-1809. Then listed are 4 of William and Hannah's children Hannah, Jennet, Alice and John born 1757-1809 which tallies with the 51, would be 52 later in the year of death. Where do the other two children Alice and Abigail fit into the family? -JLe

Sorry , yes Wm & Mary is a slip up – they were King & Queen about 17th century weren't they. Delusions of grandeur! ........However, slip or not, Abigail (Abigale) and Alice Tate have a mother named Mary.

There are a number of Tates in Elland. I think I read that the old Lightcliffe church was only licensed for baptisms and burials and later reduced to burials only. The new church at Lightcliffe was built some way from the old one so maybe Elland became more convenient or maybe some of the family migrated in that direction. John Tate 1757 went over the hills to Holme in Cliviger, Lancashire but his daughters, one being Matilda(h), mentioned on the inscription ended their days back at Yew Trees, Skircoat.

MARY TATE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 02 JAN 1791 Elland, Yorkshire, England

2. JOHN TATE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 10 AUG 1794 Elland, Yorkshire, England

3. MICHAEL TATE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 16 NOV 1788 Elland, Yorkshire, England
Presume these are the three ancestors .....but they are down the road in Elland, not in Skircoat at Halifax, unless they only lived there and chose to be baptised at Elland. This may give a clue as to where the mother came from.- jle

Is the William and Mary a slip up?

William Tate (1754) I think will be the son of William + Hannah not Mary-JLe

Just a further message on the location....Southowram is located between Lightcliffe and Halifax, so it would be reasonable to think that the family 'gravitated' towards the more industrial town of Halifax where there would be money to be made from the wealth of the town including gardening .. -JLe

Hello Margaret

Looking at familysearch there is a connecting name which I would think links the information off the tomb and your relative . Not proof but a possibility. The William on the tomb would have been born 1713-1806

William Tate son of William Tate and (Hannah )of Lightcliffe
Born/bapt 14 July 1754.

Wm Tayte/Elizabeth Astmough - I have a feeling that this is the correct family but finding the link is the problem. I have a tombstone inscription which may help or equally may add to the confusion!!

Lightcliffe Old Church Gravestone inscription.

"Here lieth the bodies of James & Mary Tate of Yew Trees, likewise their sons John, James & William, also three daughters of William Tate, Hannah, Jenet and Alice. Within this silent tomb lies slumbering here, the dust of three children, free from all pains, pride, malice and sedition. Happy are they that be in this condition anno domini 1772
In memory of Wiliam, son of the above mentioned James Tate, who departed this life on the 25th day of April1806, aged 93 years. Also of John, son of the above mentioned William Tate who departed this life on 1st day of July 1809 aged 51 years. Also of Hannah, relich of the above mentioned William Tate who departed this life on 27th day of September 1810 aged 96 years.
in all affectionate remembrance of Matildah Tate of Yew Trees, Lightcliffe who died January 30th 1881 in the 85th year of her age. Her end was in peace."."
