Hi, I am trying to trace the Allen family. I have found the family living in Shoreditch in the 1861 Census, but not before/after that date. His daughter Elizabeth Allen b. c1853 was my Gt Grandmother.

Thanks for that, but if in the 1851 Census he was a widower, do you think he remarried again before the 1861 census which shows he is married?

He's married to Mary in 1861. Presumably Elizabeth's mother. What makes you think he would have married anyone else in between?

This could be the marriage. However there seems to be another Joseph Allen around, married to a Mary Ann. Only Elizabeth's birth certificate will give you proof-positive of her mother's name.

If not this would be a sure bet to check for mother.

Perhaps this is her, but should have been born c1852 on 1861 census as her birthday would have been before 7 April. (The date of the 1861 census.)

Another possibility as they seem to be in Bethnal Green before Shoreditch. Although there is very little difference between the two. Also in 1881 Elizabeth is recorded as born Tower Hamlets, part of which is in the B Green registration district.

I'm not sure about her marriage, although I haven't been able to find that. On my Granddads BC b.1882 it shows mother Elizabeth Ann Chapman formerly Allen and they were living in Haggerston.
