Well if you get the birth cert which certainly looks like Joseph then you should know who the parents are.

Been trying to find out about the marriage of George and Mary Ann Barrett not having much luck with that one

Can't see George and Mary Ann in 1881. There is a marriage for a George and Mary Ann Warren in 1880 though.

You need to get the marriage cert - details in full on OTHER thread.

That will tell you how old Joseph said he was at the time.............and, if he knew his father's name, that will also be recorded.

No point, as far as I can see, in ordering a birth cert which MAY NOT be him

Thanks for your words of wisdom - the marriage cert sounds a better bet to order first.
