Thanks for your words of wisdom - the marriage cert sounds a better bet to order first.

Flick

Flick Report 6 Sep 2010 11:53

You need to get the marriage cert - details in full on OTHER thread.

That will tell you how old Joseph said he was at the time.............and, if he knew his father's name, that will also be recorded.

No point, as far as I can see, in ordering a birth cert which MAY NOT be him

Can't see George and Mary Ann in 1881. There is a marriage for a George and Mary Ann Warren in 1880 though.

Thanks for all your help Jax - I'll see what the birth cert reveals!

jax Report 5 Sep 2010 23:36

Well if you get the birth cert which certainly looks like Joseph then you should know who the parents are.

Been trying to find out about the marriage of George and Mary Ann Barrett not having much luck with that one

The "David" could be a middle name, but from help from the kind people on GR neither 1891 or 1901 census show David as living with the same uncle as Joseph was - although he may have been fostered out to someone else.

thanks

Joseph is overseas in 1911. Perhaps the marriage was also overseas?

What do you know about David? When did he die and whom did he marry?

Hi, this is looking very promising, although no reference to "David". Why do you think the name changes from Marrell to Barrett?

I think that could be Joseph's death, I know he died before my husband was born in the 1960s. Unfortunately my father in law's memory (his son) isn't that good. However, this does confirm he was called Joseph Freer and probably born in 1889 - many thanks again

Angela Report 5 Sep 2010 22:44

I was trying to trace Joseph's marriage earlier today, as I know his wife's name and thought that might be the way to trace Joseph's name and father's name - that's the thread that Flick is referring to - although it appears it might never have married! Thanks for your help.

Many thanks Jax, I've no idea if this is the correct Joseph Freer. Although this doesn't fit with the myth of "adoption" or a brother called David.
