The only info I have is that my grandfather Robert Stevenson was born in Scotland in 1866 & in 1886 married in Manchester to Elizabeth Bewley. The only clue that I have is that the marriage certificate shows that the father's name was Alexander Stevenson

You need to go on Scotlandspeople and find his birth. You will be able to see it straight away on the payment of 5 credits. Scottish birth certificates give a lot more information than English ones. This will tell you his mothers maiden name, how long they have been married and on some where they got married. Well worth it.

Scotlands people is the best place for Scottish birth records, but as there are several Robert Stevensons with father Alexander, you will need some other clue to be sure you get the correct one.
If you could give his father's occupation, then this could confirm one of the early census records so you will then have his place of birth, although 1911 he does give NK, which usually means Not Kown.

Catherine. Yes this him. His occupation was shown as an iron moulder. He had two other children, Albert ( my father ) who was born in 1902 & Ada who I think was born in 1905

Kath. The marriage certificate did not list Robert's mother's name. The names of the children are:- Margaret, Mary E, Florence, Robert, William, Albert & Ada

Catherine. According to Robert's marriage certificate his father' s occupation was a carter

1871 record living Doddington shows father's occupation as Rabbit Catcher and Labourer, so doesn't look to be that one.

1871 record living Camelon with mother Helen shows father's occupation as Boatman so none fit with occupation on marriage record.

They can, however, have changed occupation by the time he married so need to see what their occupations were in 1881.

Hi Catherine, many thanks for the info. The english info is spot on. The info on the scottish connection that i am inclined to is the one that jax, Tootyfruity & yourself have come up with with reference to Alexander & Helen Henderie Stevenson, residing in Falkirk. The reasoning behind this is the fact that Robert Stevenson' s marriage certificate showed that the father's of the bridegroom & bride showed the names to be Alexander & John respectively & that their occupations were shown as carters. I know that John Bewley's occupation was a police constable in the 1871 census & did not show in the 1881 census with the family in Manchester. However he did have a son with the same name therefore I am wondering if the names & occupations in the columns for fathers names were actually the names of the brothers to the bride & groom. The other info I have is that Robert & Elizabeth had a daughter in the 4th quarter of 1905 & that Elizabeth died in the 2nd quarter of 1906. Her name was Ada & was sent up to Scotland to be brought up by a member of the family up there. She later married Andrew Sneddon & lived in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire. This may be a coincidence that the family could be from S.tirlingshire. Any thoughts or info would be appreciated,

Many thanks for all the results you have found.
I am certain that the Robert Stevenson & Helen Henderie Stevenson are the right connection to my grandfather Robert. In the 1881 Scottish census both Robert & his brother Alexander have occupations as Iron Moulders, both end up in Manchester as Iron Moulders, Robert marrying my grandmother in 1886 & in the 1891 English census still employed as an Iron Moulder & Alexander in a hospital in Stockport In the 1891 English census still shown as an Iron Moulder. All I need now to really confirm this is to see if Ada Stevenson appears in the 1911 Scottish census after being sent up to Scotland to be brought up by relatives after her mother's death in 1906
