Ann or Anna Handtouch married Thomas Cooper in Trichinopoly India 8.5.1822. Trying to find a connection with Indian/Anglo Indian ancestry. Could there be a clue in the name Handtouch please?
With thanks,
Pauline

absolutely nothing coming up on this - where did you find details of this wedding?

Pauline

Pauline Report 31 Aug 2010 08:46

Hi Ann,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Details were from FIBIS. (fsbeta) The name is mentioned twice there - once at their marriage and once at the birth of their son, John Wilcock Cooper.

It is very unusual isn't it? It seemed a good idea to offer it to a 'wider' brain.
Thank you for putting yours to it.
My next move will be to look at the film on microfishe to check the transcription.

Thanks for your help Ann.

Have looked on Ancestry, and not one mention of this surname. I agree the most likely thing is a mis-transcription (pity!).

Just a thought but the English men in India were encouraged to marry Indian women, could this be an Indian name which was written as it sounded.-JLe

It´s been a long time since I was at school, but if my memory serves me correctly....and it´s not too reliable these days....I seem to remember that Trichinopoly was once in the hands of the French, making the theory that the surname could be French very likely.

Pauline

Pauline Report 4 Sep 2010 17:33

Well, yes, it could be that Janet - I am grateful for everyone's input on this for it is a dilemma for sure.

Kind regards,
Pauline.

The word "touch" is from the French anyway I believe so might be of that origin thinking about it.

That is a very good thought 'Wisechild'. 'Brummiejan' suggested that it might be French too. I am most grateful for all your help in this. I will look into French surnames now to see if there is anything like Handtouch.

Best wishes and thanks,
Pauline
