That is a very good thought 'Wisechild'. 'Brummiejan' suggested that it might be French too. I am most grateful for all your help in this. I will look into French surnames now to see if there is anything like Handtouch. |

The word "touch" is from the French anyway I believe so might be of that origin thinking about it. |

It´s been a long time since I was at school, but if my memory serves me correctly....and it´s not too reliable these days....I seem to remember that Trichinopoly was once in the hands of the French, making the theory that the surname could be French very likely. |

Just a thought but the English men in India were encouraged to marry Indian women, could this be an Indian name which was written as it sounded.-JLe |

Have looked on Ancestry, and not one mention of this surname. I agree the most likely thing is a mis-transcription (pity!). |
