Hi ,Just a thought, I've got William De Malcus George born in 1854 Gloucestershire Married to Lillee in Preston Vic.1879 and then having their children at Bass and Grantville. A little cottage at Grantville still stands and it had above the door the name of cherington. His youngest son Gethyn lived is life there. He was my grandfather.
Back to the story if he jumped ship in the 50's and married in 1879 he would have been 49 starting his family. He died 1905. Death notice in the Argus 23/09/1905
Have I missed a generation? I think there is a few years missing.
I have williams father as Rev. Wm George born in 1791

Good on you, Debbie.

I noticed that Cherington usually had one 'r' in the censuses. However spelling was more lax then and you get variations.

Thanx Potty,
I will check it out, but if you can't find it, I'll have less of a chance.
I must have spelt it wrong, as the Cherington Park we know about was in Gloucester. At least I think that is correct! I will have to Google it.Much appreciated
Debbie

Potty Report 13 Jul 2010 15:41

There's lots coming up on Google for Cherington Park (only one "r" - there is another one in Warwickshire which has two)

The National Archives has naval records but for ordinary seaman they don't start until 1853. I have checked what there is but no William or Walter George is coming up.

This site tells you what is available:

I can't say for sure but I think Walter & William are separate people. Walter is at home in 1841 whereas I think I found William at school in 1841. It makes sense that the eldest son would be named after his father.

It is possible William is at sea in 1851. He would've been about 23.

House proprietor usually means owner, & it looks like William snr may have had the living as Rector of Cherrington, though perhaps had a lesser cleric do the everyday business of the church.

Thankyou for all your help.
Apparently, Cherrington park stayed in the family until the 1950's. It was quite a large property added to by John George, brother to William.
Do you know where I could check Naval records for England? I only know the sites for Australia and I checked there and they have no connection.
I want to find out if William or Walter joined the Navy.
Your time has been greatly appreciated.

Hi Ozi,
Thankyou, does land proprietor mean they owned the land or just lived on the land. Was he a cleric at the church. It seems that my grandfathers name could have been Walter instead of William and he may have taken on his fathers name. As we do believe he ran away from his ship, thus needing to change his name.
I've found a lot of my relatives from England tend to have one name but called another.
Yes the William from the Pupil School does look promising.
The 'DeWheelock' is a middle name and has been carried on through the family for a few more generations. It may have come from somewhere before these Georges, or from the mothers side. I know as much about it as you!

I really appreciate your help
thankyou Debbie
