Phillip Report 24 Jun 2010 07:01

I am trying to find the correct name of my paternal grandfather and his father. My grandfather joined the AIF in Sep 1916 from Tasmania under the name of John William LOWE (Service No 6610), he married Gladys Ann BIMSON in Netherton, England in Aug 1919 and they moved back to Tasmania. I have been told that his real name was Maurice Eldred LOWE c. 1898 and he listed his father on his Army enlistment papers as Albert LOWE. Any help would be most appreciated?

Hi Phillip and hi Choccy as well.

Have you tried the AIF project site. This is the address

http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/showPerson?pid=180491

It is very interesting to see that under his "Fate" that Maurice was listed as still overseas. This information would have come from his AIF service papers.

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 24 Jun 2010 12:40

Have you seen his AIF Service Records from WW1. There are 33 pages of records about John William Lowe service No 6610 on the National Australian Archives web site. I have not read all of them but there is mention of his marriage.

This is the address. Now I do not know if it will take you to the correct page or if you need to put in some of the info listed further down this post.

He refers to his date of birth as 27/1/1899 and his mother as "Dora Lowe" in an application for reissue of his discharge papers.

You may already have all this info.

Hi Dee, sorry I edited before your posting. Going to edit my edit and put it here. Your search has found Dora and now I am even more confused.

My previous edit was...........
Been doing some thinking about this. Are you able to say how you know that John William Lowe was actually Maurice Eldred Lowe. There is a list of men who used aliases during WW1 and these names are not amongst that list. Not that the list is a complete and undeniable list, however...........

Do you know where and when Maurice/John came to Australia. He was born in Yorkshire in 1899 and then in 1916 he is living in Tassie and enlisting in the AIF. Have you found his family's migration to Australia.

Clarence is a Carter and is registered on theAus elect rolls in 1919........ could he be Maurices' brother??

And Dora and Maurice Eldred and Albert George Lowe are all living together at 98 Balfour Street Launceston Tasmania in 1937. Maurice's occupation is given as barman. His war service record also gives his date of death as 1946.

And my apologies. I need to go to sleep. Will catch up with you again in the morning. I am falling asleep here.

Hi Aunty,

Birth: 1894 - Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Parents: Albert George Lowe, Dora Constance Hardy

So looks like our chap could have been born over there???

Now I am really out of my depth searching in Tas. I'm Uk based so I think you may need intervention from someone more experienced from this area...... Aunty looks like she knows what she's doing.

If I come across anything else I'll pop it on here and hopefully wont confuse the issue.

Good morning. Yes Tasmania is one of the places it is easier to search from at the library. I am really puzzled as to which Lowe family we are searching, the one with Albert married to Ellen with a son Maurice all born in England. Or the one Albert married to Dora with a son John William who is supposed to the called Maurice but might be Clarence Albert or Brian or Harold.

Need an analytical brain for this.

PS I am pmming Phillip and asking him to return to his thread to see what a muddle we have made of it.

Phillip Report 24 Jun 2010 22:45

Thank you all so very much, I'm staggered and humbled that there are so many lovely people eager to help a beginner. I have my fathers birth cert which lists him as Morris Eldred LOWE b. Aug 1927. His fathers name on the Birth Cert is listed as Morris Eldred LOWE (same name) by my mum told me that he spelled his name Maurice Eldred. His marriage certificate is listed as John William (obviously to match his Army details) but in the post war electoral rolls as suggested by you, he and Gladys were listed but his name was spelt Maurice? I have applied for a copy of his birth Cert from Tasmania which could assist. I do have copies of his service record and photo's of him in WW1. I think that AuntySherlock's second option is the one I'll pursue because some of the addresses are ones that my father said he'd lived in.

Thanks again to all of you.

Phillip

Phillip Report 24 Jun 2010 23:28

AuntySherlock, I haven't found immigration records at this stage as I believed that Maurice was born in Tasmania. Family rumours had it that he joined the AIF by lying about his age (and perhaps name), being sent home and then re-enlisting in Sep 1916 which military records show.

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 25 Jun 2010 00:13

Hi Phillip. Thanks for your reply. I am really intrigued that the family Choccy found in the UK (the first few posts) so mirrors the names and dates of birth of your family born in Tasmania. If it was not for that snippet of info on his war service records that his mother's name was Dora I would have be arguing with you about them being born in Tasmania.

Thoroughly agree with your strategy of the birth certificate. Have you had a look at how he came to be married in the UK. My dim memory says he married during the war..... Therefore you probably will not find him on any incoming UK immigration lists. There might be more address info we can access from the electoral rolls. I will have a look tonight.

Phillip

Phillip Report 25 Jun 2010 13:30

Hi AuntySherlock, it seems that Maurice may have been wounded and sent back to hospital in England. He most likely that he met Gladys during recuperation, got married and brought her home as a "war bride". I have a copy of their Marriage Certificate and they were married on the 28th August 1919 in Netherton.

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 26 Jun 2010 22:39

Hi Phillip. If you have accessed his service records you will see his complete medical information during the war, and yes he was injured and sent back to UK. I had not worked out his marriage coincided with him meeting his wife at that time. I have some more addresses for you. I need to type them out so I will be back in a short while.
