Annie,
I know for certain that Ellen died Oct 1905 and Richard died 1910.I was searching in wigan cemetery records for the grave number of Jane and her husband Richard Finch and was surprised to find Richard and Ellen Fairhurst buried with them. It was on these records that told me Richard Fairhurst had died march 1910 in Whittingham Asylum.

A tree on Ancestry has 5 children of Richard & Ellen:
Richard 1868
Elizabeth 1871
John 1875
Arthur, 1877
Ellen 1881

The only one they show a marriage for is Richard married to Alice with 4 daughters.

I think this tree is wrong. I don't see how they could have had a son Richard born 1868. Their daughter Jane was christened Jan 1869 and since their other children were christened when they were about a month old, I think she must have been born abt. Dec, 1868. That was the year they were married.

Mary Report 17 May 2010 18:06

Ellen was 53 when she died 1905 and Richard 59 in 1910
according to cemetery records.
Know these are the right dates being buried with the Finch family.
When I first looked on 1881 there was another family of Fairhurst in same area with Mother Ellen widow and Daughter Jane who was 13.Both families were in same area of Wigan. They also had other children. Joseph,Mary,Thomas and Jacob as well as Jane.

There's another family in Wigan having children in the 1860's, Robert & Ellen.
Also a Matthew & Ellen having children in the 1880's.
Not to mention the unmarried Ellens having children.
They don't make it easy, do they?

Mary Report 17 May 2010 18:25

Margaret and Annie,
Loads of Fairhursts and Finchs around that area with large Families.I found a baptism of Jane Fairhurst dau of Richard and Ellen at St Catherines Jan 4th 1869 but just looked again at my cemetery record and Jane died Jan 1936 aged 65 years so that would make her birth 1871. So that couldn't be her unless they didn't give the right age when she died.

Thank you so much Annie and Margaret for all your time and help.I will go to search the parish records for baptisms at st Catherines and see if I can match up some childrens names with the census you gave me if they give any addresses in the records. Think this is going to keep me busy for quite a while. Please can I ask another favour. I need to match a Rachel Finch with these Finchs and Fairhursts . Please can you look when you have time for a Rachel Finch born 1894 Wigan in the census to find her parents.
Your help is much appreciated

Annie G, Margaret Manson and Lancashire Ann
Thank you all for the time ,help and information you gave me last night.Couldn't get back to you till now as I had to have my little grandson overnight. They let my son out of hospital early this morning with 2 lots of antibiotics and a bagful of painkillers.Hopefully he should recover now at home.Worrying time though.
Annie, The 1901 census you found for Richard and Ellen Fairhurst could you please tell me the address as I have just found out that they were living at 12 Upper Morris Street Wigan at the time of Ellen's death and just wondered if it was the same.
Think its going to take me a long time to sort out these Fairhursts and Finchs.
Thanks again everyone for all your help it was very much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Mary
