The thread below has successfully sorted Johns linneage to George Hall 1849 Rawcliffe and I am now looking for George with his family in 1861 based on
Hall George 1849 Rawcliffe Goole, Snaith

****************************************

From the G.R. single line census I have found :-

Births Mar 1887
Hall John Hunslet
9b 290

I believe this matches John Hall who got married in Leeds in 1910 and on his marriage certificate he had a father George deceased, Railway Signalman. Does the 1891 census confirm this please.

Many thanks,
Frances

Hi Julie,
I have just had another look at the marriage for John and it was in March 1910 so I don't think the 1888 birth would let him be 23. Also a witness is Annie Hall and the census you have given me has a sister Annie. I have also heard Witkirk mentioned in connection with this family.
My efforts since you posted the census have been spent on trying to find the family in 1881 but neither George c.1878 or Mary c.1880 are showing up. Were they actually born somewhere other than Leeds please?

Julie Report 15 May 2010 17:21

Ok ...but ages are not always correct

All i was trying to point out was don't assume the birth you have found is your John Hall

I wasn't saying that the census isn't your John

Thank you Julie, I just found George senior in 1901 with a birth in Rawcliffe and Railway Signalman which pinpointed him in 1881! Of course I didn't know his first wife had died and he didn't marry Elizabeth Cawood until Dec Qtr 1882.......... but I do now.

Thank you Christina. The parents seem quite old, I wonder if they had earlier children? The birth place of Newcastle for George senior is interesting as son George's first two children were born in Northumberland. Perhaps he went to stay with a relative up there and that was where he found his first wife......? Looks like there's a bit more to fathom out with this family!

Thank you Christina, I haven't seen Grace in later census so she must have died before 1861. I have found Harriet as the daughter of Grace Plaxton but Plaxton was her second marriage so that search became somewhat convoluted!

Thanks for all the extra Christine, so Grace not dead! George and Harriet seem keen to farm their children out. Grace Plaxton - Grace Rhodes - Grace Allott 1797 Hoyland. I did get there eventually.
