I am trying to find the parents of Kitorah Tremayne. She was born in 1824 in Cornwall (St Agnes I think). She married John Martin in Stoke Devon on Mar 1843 and then later married a John Bailey. Kitorah died in Bermondsey Surrey in 1878.
I'd like to trace her parents and grandparents.

Just to confirm

Marriages Mar 1843 (>99%)

MARTIN John Stoke Damerel 9 443
TREMAYNE Ketturah Stoke Damerel 9 443

We'll have to take care here as it looks like there are 2 of them (unbelievably!)

Marriages Jun 1848 (>99%)
Tremayne Kitorah Plymouth 9 480

You might need her marriage cert to at least have her father's name.

Hi Lydia
there is a Kittorah Tremayne in the 1841 census, however she was born in Stoke Damerell in Devon.
Parents were Henry and Phillipa Tremayne. May or may not be her

The baptism record Christina posted with parents Henry and Phillipa matches the census records.

batch: C053061

The other birth in the IGI with those parents also matches the census Mary:

MARY JANE TREMAYNE
Christening: 25 DEC 1836 Kea, Cornwall, England
Father: HENRY TREMAYNE
Mother: PHILIPPA
Batch No.: C052811

Looks like there is only one - so what do people make of the second marriage on Freebmd? (See my post further up).

Well in aid of full disclosure for starting off ;) --

EMMETT William Gedley Plymouth 9 480
FRICKER Henry Plymouth 9 480
Tremayne Kitorah Plymouth 9 480
TWITCHELL Margaret Plymouth 9 480
Westaway Sarah Plymouth 9 480

Can we find that one in 1851?

Oh, hold on, the OP says she married Martin and later Bailey.

Strikes me as one of those non-fact facts. If she married Bailey in 1848,

(a) it would have been as Martin, not Tremayne
(b) she would have been Bailey in 1851, not Mart(a)in.

Facts that are not established to be actual facts should not be stated as facts!

This one could be established maybe -- if the info on both marriage certificates matched up as to father's name, e.g. It's possible a widow would have remarried under her birth surname, given that people were generally illiterate and may have just answered as asked. Certificates needed!

Unfortunately, I don't see her in 1861 under either surname.

Is this them in 1871?

County/Island: Cornwall
John Martyn 40
Kitty Martyn 41 - born St Austell
Harriett Ann Martyn 18

1861 in St Austell:

>> no >> leaving them here to rule them out:

Looks like!

Son William matches William Mart(a)in in 1851.

Sure would have been nice if Lydia had come back to visit her thread and elucidate ...

Hi Maddie,
Yes I think that could be her.
Does it give any info about her parents?
Thank you

Lydia ... have you read the thread at all?

Lydia

Lydia Report 10 May 2010 11:44

Hi Janey,
As far as I know so far, Kitorah married John Martin in 1843 and had a son William Martin in 1844. John died in 1845 and Kitorah then partnered up with John Bailey. I have no record of a marriage. They did have children though. Kitorah b. 1852, John b. 1856, Henry b. 1859 and Emily b. 1861.
Hope this helps.

Lydia

Lydia Report 10 May 2010 11:47

Yes I see that her parents were Henry and Phillippa Tremayne but I need to find out more about them. Like where they lived, who Henrys parents were etc.
I just can't seem to find out anything about them. It's weird.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 May 2010 12:00

You do have the record of the Bailey marriage. The info from the GRO index as found at FreeBMD is posted in this thread. You need the marriage certificate to confirm the identity of that K Tremayne -- age, father's name. You also need the certificate for the K Tremayne marriage to Martin for the same reason.

Well, the census records show where Henry and Phillipa Tremayne lived ... and who all their other children were ... The 1851 census says he was a ropemaker born in "Beaudork", Cornwall, which would be Budock, I imagine, and she was born in Feock, Cornwall.

What have you done to try to find out more about them?

The 41 and 51 censuses show a son Richard born about 1839. Have you looked at FreeBMD for his birth? If it was registered, the birth certificate would give his mother's birth surname.

So I looked, and the birth is right there, 1838 in Stoke Damerel. Once you do that search and get the registration details, you can order the certificate here:

JaneyCanuck Report 10 May 2010 12:05

The parents' marriage is in the Cornwall OPC database:

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/searchdb.php?dbname=marriages

Search for the marriage of Henry Tremayne and Philippa (I just asked for given name Phil, because of spelling variations -- the search engine finds all names starting with that).

Unfortunately, when you click on "more info" there are no parents' names in the record. However, that does give you Philippa's surname. You can go on to search there in the baptisms database for their baptisms/parents.

It will be infinitely more fun to do those searches yourself, of course!

Thank you so much Janey.
Unfortunately I am limited in my searches as I don't have money online to pay for the results (views of records). I search the free ones online and go as far as I can with genesreunited, FreeBMD and ancestry.com.
I am so thankful for the help you all have given me and I appreciate it immensely.
Thankyou once again.

JaneyCanuck Report 10 May 2010 12:17

The Cornwall OPC databases are completely free.

All the info in this thread comes from FreeBMD, plus Ancestry (or FMP) for the censuses, or the IGI, which is also free -- in case I or someone didn't give the url:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

If you browse around the Cornwall OPC site, you can identify the online parish clerks for parishes of interest, and find how to contact them. In my experience and others who have asked for their help, they are very helpful and generous with their time. For records that aren't transcribed, many of the OPCs have copies and are very willing to do lookups.

Eventually, though, we all have to get some certificates where they are available (post 1837), to confirm things.
