My cousin and I are trying to trace the parents and history of her grandmother Dora Hahn. She married Alexander Taylor at Stoke Newington Sept 1/4 1936.
She was born in Sunderland, to unknown mother, but father was possibly German, and my cousin tells me she was possibly German/Jewish.
Her stepfather Harry came into her life when she was young, and nothing is known of her true father, except that he may have been an albino.
Her mother had a shop, and one of her sister's was Thelma, that married a Clem.
We do not know if Hahn was her original surname or her stepfather's name.
Quite a mystery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My apologies, was called away.
Dora had a sister called Thelma. No we don't have any certificates.
My cousin oesn't know if Hahn was the stepfather (Harry) or the original father.
My cousins insist her father came from Germany, though both have given me varying information. I am trying to stay with actual information.

Christine, the Dora Newbold Hahn looks most interesting.
I have searched for variants of her name as in Endora, Dorathea, Doris etc, but the marriage record I found, which is correct, is Dora, so we must presume with that was her name and not an alternative.

Our grandparents (my cousins and myself), didn't tell us anything about their relatives or life in England. It is as if when the migrated here to Australia, they started afresh. No..there were no scandals or anything, but perhaps because they were in London during the blitz, and lost relatives to the war, they spoke little of England. I am lucky that my mum can remember certain people, but she was just 15 when they left, and her memory is fading.

Wendy Report 9 May 2010 08:48

Minnie, I am thinking, that Jacob Hahn from 1911 could be the father with a daughter.
Dora wasn't yet born.
I will check the messages frommy cousin to see if there's any more information there.

Just had a general search for Dora, and find a birth, 1915 Sutherland..Dora Hahn..mother NEWBOLD.
I think you have all struck the right line.
Now to pinpoint her parents.
I have found a couple of Jacob Hahns from Germany, but age and location don't seem to fit.
Then again, my cousins could have mixed up her father and perhaps her grandfather.

"Hahn Elizabeth E Newbold Sunderland 10a 1478

Christine, how do we explain this entry???

Births Mar 1915 (99%)

HAHN Dora Newbold Sunderland 10a 1452

Were they cousins? Twins?

My cousin told me that one of Dora's sister had twins. One of the twins died when he fell into a sewage pit and his boots filled up and dragged him down before they could save him!

Elizabeth was registered in the June quarter of 1913.

Have a look for them on freebmd here....

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

She could well be a sibling, ..or a cousin, ..or possibly just a coincidence.
She has a different year, quarter and page number, ..so not a twin.

NB
Look in Search Trees towards the top of the page. Someone has Elizabeth in their tree.

EDIT
This link to Australia archives shows a birthdate for Dora, ...but I have known transcriptions to be poor.

Dora's sister Martha may have had twins in 1934... Check the freebmd site to find details of her marriage registration and possible births of children.

Hi Wendy,

Sorry for the confusion about the birth registration of Elizabeth.
She probably was a sister to Dora.

Here are the 3 births.

Births Sep 1911 (>99%)
Hahn Martha Newbold Sunderland 10a 1476

Births Jun 1913 (>99%)
Hahn Elizabeth E Newbold Sunderland 10a 1478

Births Mar 1915 (99%)
HAHN Dora Newbold Sunderland 10a 1452

According to the details Gwyn found, Dora's birthdate was 28th Nov 1914. That could fit with a 1st Qtr 1915 registration as you were allowed 6 weeks to register the birth.

To be sure of her parents names you need her birth cert.

Christine

I have done a search on BMD and listed all Hahns in Sunderland 1900-1930..Only 1 Dora and 1 apparent sibling.
I will have to wit for my cousin to come back online to see if she may have made a mistake.

Christine, I can't find Elizabeth on Freebmd. Have you found Dora?

Ahh, yes, I did have it, just scrolled too far on my notes page..TY. I am wondering if my cousin is guessing at Thelma, and it is Martha.
If they are correct, then one of them married someone called Clem. And one of them had twins.
