There are 19 people with that name showing born in 1790 in the Inverness shire area alone. Do you have any more details at all?

Thankyou very much any details of her parents ?

Shirley

Shirley Report 29 Apr 2010 16:55

That says Christian was female it there a mistake do you think?

Potty

Potty Report 29 Apr 2010 17:00

Christian was quite often used as a female first name in Scotland.

There is a submitted marriage on familysearch for John and Elspat. A marriage between John Macdonald and ? Fraser is also on scotlandspeople for the same date and place (16 Feb 1804, Urquhart). Sorry, but I don't have any credits to view the image.

Potty

Potty Report 29 Apr 2010 17:15

Sorry, I can't find a definite birth for Elspat. Is she on the 1841 census?

Potty

Potty Report 29 Apr 2010 17:20

The submitted record for Elspat and John gives her father's name as Donald

Her mother was Christian Fraser Can anyone help confirm this.

Shirley, as a guide if you find an extracted entry on the IGI and you are fairly sure that it is your family then look at Scotlandspeople at the record. It may give a little more information. Most (but not all) of the Old Parish Records entries on Scotlandspeople are available on the IGI at www.familysearch.org This may save you a few credits. Many of the OPR entries are difficult to read, it just depends on how clear a writer recorded them.

Where there are two surnames this can indicate that the person was illegitimate and known by either of the surnames. Where a birth is listed under two surnames on the IGI it is worth looking at the original on SP as it will tell you if the parents were married.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Shirley, I agree with Helen, you have done very well to get so far back. As well as surnames being common, the Scottish naming pattern means that you can have several first cousins named for the grandparents!

If you still need help deciphering the writing let me know but I wouldn't be able to look at them before Wednesday - the next couple of days are spoken for!
