Can someone please take a look at the image on the following census return and tell me what they think the grandson Henry's surname is?

1891 Channel Islands
Class: RG12; Piece: 4697; Folio 112; Page 1; GSU roll: 6099807.

Head of House - Richard Buemel (tho should be Buesnel)

Many Thanks

Cathy Report 18 Apr 2010 20:25

Hi jerseylily,

Could it be Hazell? it looks a bit like the Y's on the next page but I'm going to have another look...

Findmypast has it as Hayell

It could also be Hafell or even Hafsell?

Kind regards,

Cathy

Thanks for the reply - I know that Richard's surname is Buesnel - it's the grandson Henry's surname I'm after. I don't think it's Hapell as transcribed.

may be easier to find the marriages of Richard's daughter to find name?

A few to think about there. Thanks

Is 1891 too late for them to be using those funny double s's that look like f's? I was hoping someone might read it as Hassell. It definitely begins Ha, with a very curly H and I think ends in double l

That's the next step Rose. I think she married a Henry Hassell only young Henry seems to disappear after this census.

Very difficult to decide, transcribed as Hayell but looks more like Healell or Healpell - have you tried looking for his birth on the IGI

I am pretty certain it is Hassell. The H has an extended curly bit as have lots of the enumerator's words beginning with H, e.g. Head. The next letter is "a". The last three letters are "ell". The difficulty is with the middle letter(s). It was the custom back then to write a double-ess as fs, hence my ancestors Cross being written as Crofs. I am pretty sure this surname is "fs" in the middle.

On page 6 (I think) there is a family transcribed as Rabaqae, alternative is Rabasse, and I think the latter is correct.

So I think the surname is Hassell.

That is most unfortunate. I know a living person with that name, who has rejected my on three different job applications, so it is not a name I particularly like!

Thank you for that Meg, your thoughts on the handwriting pretty much mirror mine.
Sorry about your hassles with someone of that surname - fortunately they're not my ancestors, I'm doing some local digging for a lady in Oz.

I think it could be the double 's'! Therefore Henry Heassell or Henry Hassell if that 'e' is part of the curly 'H'.

If you go to the next page the first household has 'p' in their name and it doesn't look like the letter in your bloke's name. Also they have dressmakers in the family and the enumerator uses that old-fashioned double 's'.

Update: Didn't realize Madmeg had sussed it out as well.

I've tried looking for the birth, also for the parents...either way born St Saviours and living in Shoreditch before Henry was born or after vice versa...but with no joy.

Thanks everyone for your input - Hassell it is then.

Now to find a marriage between Henry Hassell, who according to the 1891 was a musician from Leicester, and Jessie Baker. I'll yell if I get stuck.

Cathy Report 18 Apr 2010 23:13

I'm getting confused now?

I thought we were looking for Henry Ha*ell born 1882 in Shoreditch London living in Jersey as a scholar aged 9 with his
Grandparents in 1891?

Who's Henry Hassell, who according to the 1891 Census was a musician from Leicester?

Rambling

Rambling Report 18 Apr 2010 23:23

Cathy , Henry Hassell (snr) is also in St Saviour, in 1891 with his wife andfamily, so I am assuming is henry's father...also I have sent 1881 of them in cas JL hasn't seen

i don't how that works either lol

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 18 Apr 2010 23:24

I hadn't got this far Cathy. So, are we looking for little Henry b1882 Shoreditch living in the Channel Islands in 1891, a scholar, or are we looking for a totally different Henry who is a musician?
