In my search for Harriet Town (nee Smith1874), I have stumbled on a census with a Lilian Casuns neice. The Casuns are believed to have been the caretakers of the Round Chapel? and dear friends of the Taylors. Harriet Town (nee Smith) was called nan by my mother (Jeanette Taylor 1939), and possibly a relation through my G Grandmother Eliza Fish (nee Smith 1884). All of these families lived in the Hackney/Bethnal Green area.
Any possible connections?

I think Homerton is Hackney, and if she is 8 in 1901 then birth 1892/1893. I did not think of Cousins, because the original email says Casuns.
But the only remote I can see in Hackney is out for age:
Births Mar 1891
Cousins Susan Lilley Hackney 1b 535
any other suggestions for casuns?

Thankyou all for the response.
Choccy has the correct census for the Casons. Their son Charlie was killed in 1818 in the war.
Let me tell you the story and the reason I asked about Lilian Casuns.
My great grandmother died when my nan was 13. An only child, she never spoke much of her family. They migrated to Australia, and it has only been the last couple of years I have tried to find my family.
Hariet Town was called nan by my mother, and I have photoes of her grandchildren Ron and Barbara. I have since found out she is a Smith. My G Grandmother was Eliza Smith, and immediately I see a possible connection. While searching data sent to me by a member, I see Lilian Casuns neice in the census, and remember mum telling me about Charlie and Lizzie Cason. I suspect a typo in the census, and search deeper to find Elizabeth Cason (yes choccy, correct census again), is ALSO A SMITH!

So now I have surname links, with Elizabeth, Harriet and Eliza all Smiths, as well as Cason.

My trouble is, Harriet's father appears to be a Henry Smith (1841), this is too old and too young to be a brother to any Eliza's known relations.

Wendy

Wendy Report 5 Apr 2010 15:24

Eliza's grandfather was William Smith (1826 Birmingham). His wife Hannah was born in 1831, so they couldn't have had a son born in 1841 to be Eliza's uncle. However, I am having trouble tracing William's parents and siblings, as records only start at 1841. Perhaps there is a younger brother Henry there.
Obviously I must look at the males to keep the Smith name there. Also interesting is trying to find the Cason/Smith link. I do know that Harriet Town (Smith) had a relative Lilian Cason. And Cason is not a common name.
All of these people in my mum's early life were connected.
It's become very intriguing

Wendy

Wendy Report 5 Apr 2010 15:28

I will add, Eliza's was born in Finchley, as were her siblings. Her mother Emma Harrison came also from Finchley, but her father Samuel was from Warwickshire - Edgbaston.
While Harriet Town's (Smith) family were all from Bethnal Green area. This only makes it a bit harder to connect.

Cason Lilian Elizabeth Hackney 1b 519

Do you think we can delve into Lilian a bit more? Maybe she is the connection we need. Obviously she must be the daughter of a Smith daughter...and the age of Elizabeth would fit in as Harriet's older sister. So Elizabeth was already married, therefore not listed with the rest of the family in my 1901 census...makes perfect sense. I have not been able to find any records of a sister to Charles, but this doesn't mean there wasn't one. She may have died young. And Charles died in 1918, which wouldn't have given him much time to meet, marry and have a child before he went to war, but not impossible.

Wendy Report 13 Apr 2010 16:11

SUCCESS!!!!!
Many many many thanks to all of you that have solved the riddles, and finally everything fits.
My mistake having initially found the wrong Great Grandmother.
The Cason's, Town's and Smith's are all related as sister's...my G Grandmother, and G Great Aunts.
Lilian turned out to be the daughter of Elizabeth Cason, who is the sister to Harriett Town, and the sisters of Eliza Fish, my G Grandmother.
I couldn't have done it without you all, and hope I can return the favour some day.
Wendy.

Refreshing................

I have just been looking through my records, and found some interesting conflicts from 1911, and the census copy I have may not be the correct person.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cason was the daughter of Henry Smith and Eliza Broomhead.
Lizzie was born 14/09/1865 Hackney.
In the 1891 census she is living with her parents at 13 The Grove, Homerton. Her father listed her name as Lizzie.
Later that year she married Charles Cason, born 1866, Homerton.
They had 2 children, Lilian Elizabeth, 1892, and Charles 1998, both born in Homerton.

All I can find for 1901 is
Charles Cason aged 3 born Clapton residing Hackney
Lilian Cason aged 9 born Millwall residing Poplar
Elizabeth aged 35 born Clapton residing in Hackney
No record for Charles aged 35

In the 1911 census, Charles is recorded as living at 87 High St., Whitechapel (Round Chapel), with his son Charles aged 3, and 3 employees. However, he is stated as married and having 1 child born and 1 child still living.
Daughter Lilian is recorded with her grandparents Henry and Eliza at 30 Churchill rd., Tresham Ave. Lower Clapton, but Henry has listed Lilian as a visitor. Another child, the son of another daughter is listed as his grandson. I find this unusual.
Elizabeth Cason, by the record I have, is in an institution as an inmate, recorded as married with 2 children born and still living. Although I have no address, it is possible it is in Westhampnett Sussex.

I have found another entry for an Elizabeth Cason, this time in Orsett Essex (which would make more sense, she may have been visiting someone).

My resources are limited to look through the records. The listings I have found are for pay to view sites, so I was unable to look at the records to find more details.

Lilian was born mentally handicapped, and spent most of her time with other family members, so it is not unexpected to find her away from her parents, but I am very curious as to where Elizabeth was in 1911, and to find more details to explain why Charles only recognised 1 child in 1911, and where was he in 1901?

Any help with 1901 and 1911 census' would be greatly appreciated.

Second forenames can be quite important when trying to identify individuals:

Marriages Sep 1891
Cason Charles Edward Hackney 1b 1064
Smith Elizabeth Hackney 1b 1064

It looks likely that Lilian Elizabeth Cason died in 1949:

Deaths Jun 1949
Cason Lilian E 56 Surrey Mid.E. 5g 152

Births Sep 1892
Cason Lilian Elizabeth Hackney 1b 519

Perhaps as Lilian Elizabeth was no longer resident in his household Charles Edward Cason considered that she was dead even though she wasn't.

Wendy Report 26 Jun 2012 15:30

Ty for that, I was looking for the info on the institution. The word "inmate" conjours up all sorts of ideas!
Is that the 1901 census without Lilian again?

Wendy

Wendy Report 26 Jun 2012 15:34

In hindsight, I am wondering if Charles wrote on the 1911 census the number of living children at that address? That would explain why he omitted Lilian.
I am just looking up info on the home.
