Have you looked to see if anyone has that name in their tree on here

Yes

Mmm. Lots of A. Vospers on this site.

I am wondering if the Sr indicates that A. Vosper was a nun, the Sr being short for Sister?????? Cx.

Cynthia

I took the Sr to be Senior

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 28 Mar 2010 19:51

I think senior would come after the name, not before it though Julie and I think senior keeps the 'n'..........you know, George Bush Snr. Likewise, George Bush Jnr. etc. Whereas I am pretty sure that nuns are referred to as Sr Angelica whatever.

Unless it was for church use, a nun wouldn't have such an item, would they?
I agree that the lettering might indicate Sister though.......

Perhaps a gift to someone commemoratng an event, ....baptism, marriage etc?

1891 could be a birth date or a 21st birthday. Sounds like only a well-off family would have such a thing.

What sort of glass is it?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 28 Mar 2010 21:42

Sylvia??? Hello?? Do tell. Cx.

The glass is about the size of a large sherry glass.
If you go to this site you might be able to see my postings there plus photos of glass

My brain isn't coming up with any good ideas. Sr is certainly the title of a nun and I can't imagine a "non-nun" putting their title on a glass. I wonder if that was the day she completed her training.

Obviously not all nuns take the traditional Catholic saint's names cos Sr Mary Ellen Lacy is on Facebook and she is definitely a nun.

She might not have been English, there are nuns all over the world.

Does it look like Vosper, or Vasper do you think? Do you think it could be Sr short for Senor?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 29 Mar 2010 21:13

Have had a look. I wonder if it is in the shape of a small chalice? Maybe a gift when she was professed? Cx.

Sylvia Report 29 Mar 2010 21:19

Tried ship builders but could not find any one with initial of A.

Sylvia Report 29 Mar 2010 21:30

I have found Mr A Vosper on incoming passenger list to Liverpool from Columbia in 1913. He was a 1st class pasenger with his wife and son. He was an engineer. What do you think? Could this be senor Vosper?
Also found Mr A Vosper born 1846, wife and son incoming passengers in1896 from Natal, Brazil, they were not English.

Madmeg Report 29 Mar 2010 22:27

Cynthia, I thought of a small chalice.

Sylvia, an English (or similar) person wouldn't have a glass inscribed with Mr Fred Bloggs, so I can't imagine a Brazilian would either.

My guess is its a nun. Oh, Cynth, when she was "professed", well done!

There is a Catholic genealogy website somewhere, hang on....

Anybody out there with a relative who is a nun?

Just realised you've posted this on familytreeforum, and Old Crone has responded. Would you give her our best wishes and tell her we miss her on here?

Old Crone suggests it says "S & A Vosper".

No, but I'm very friendly with our local parish priest - we exchange crossword clues(!) so will ask him. Cx.
