Find Ancestors

I was wondering whether if Millicent married aged 14 that she had to have parentla consent, however I have foudn this on rootschat which implies that it was not required.
"Lord Hardwicke's 1753 Marriage Act, made it illegal for those in England under the age of 21 to get married without the consent of their parents or guardians. The consent requirement was repealed and replaced in July 1822, and an act in July 1823 restored the pre-1753 rule of Canon 100. In effect, therefore, from 1823 the age at which a couple could undergo a valid marriage, even without parental consent, reverted to 14 for boys and 12 for girls. The 1929 Age of Marriage Act made all marriages void from 10 May 1929, if either partner was under the age of 16. The legal age for marriage remained at 14 for boys and 12 for girls in the Republic of Ireland, until 1st January 1975, when it was raised to 16."



However the marriage certificates doesn't give year of birth , just age. Does it definitely say 14 or could it be 19??

I have a picture of my grandmother that i found when my mother had died and the picture was taken when she was 50 yrs old and she def looked 80. She didnt look her age at all. She hadnt worn well over the years. She had a total of 14 children 4 sets of twins plus according to my Aunty 'multiple deaths. Perhaps her life was taking it's toll on her looks. Which makes me think she was born in 1899 instead of 1904 - i know five years isnt much but hey.

She should, in theory, be aged 12 in the 1911 census and I should be able to find her, but I cant. She was probably 32 when she married not 27 as she stated. I think the witness on the marriage cert might be my key to finding more information,!!!!!

Where would i locate Medical Records from? There would not be a passport or will as my Grandparents were really poor - they had a council house since the children (my mother and her siblings) were born - 1930's.

Thank you for all your research and help - you have no idea how much i appreciate this. One day this mystery will be solved, I know that my Grandmother had something to hide, perhaps shameful in her day - but i am determind to find her. There must have been some truth in the information she had given, either on her marriage or death certs? I keep pestering my Aunt for snippets of information but she, herself, is in the dark - she would love to know what happened to her mother before she married her father - preferably before she dies also.

you would have to try and work out who her GP was and contact the surgery....long shot I know!


If they lived in a council house maybe you could contact the local council and see if they can come up with anything??

I think it would also be a good idea to get the Glamorgan baptism CD or ask on the GR records office community board if any one has access to it.
