I would like to find my Grandmothers Employment details from when she worked at the Clare Hall Hospital in 1918 aged 14yrs. Does anyone have any information on employees from Clare Hall from this period? She was a domestic Help. Hoping to find her Parents details and birth details. Thanks.

Trudie Report 1 Oct 2009 06:54

Thank you. Millicent was from Wales and left there at 14 to work at Clare Hall Hospital. She was allegedly born in Pontypridd. Her death cert states she died in Clare Hospital too (not of TB tho - cancer) in 1972. She never spoke of her childhood or family and took her family details to her grave. Her death cert states she was born in 1899 but her marriage states 1904 - she names her father as Richard Gwynum Thomas on her marriage cert but I have been unable to locate him. I have numerous birth certs for millicent, none being her - so, I thought I would try the employment route to see if there was more information on a Employment Record. Thank you for your information, but i have been unable to find her on the 1911 census also.

Clare Hall

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=074-hnw1&cid=0#0

Administrative history:
Note: The hospital to which the first three registers listed below relate was situated in the parish of St. Pancras on the site of the present King's Cross Station. The institution had moved here from Windmill Street, Tottenham Court Road, in 1746, and had been rebuilt c. 1793-4 when it received patients from the Cold Bath Fields Hospital in Clerkenwell, a foundation originating in Islington in 1740.
The hospital moved from King's Cross to Highgate Hill c.1846, and from there to Clare Hall, South Minns c.1895-9. It was acquired by the Middlesex Districts Joint Small Pox Hospital Board c.1900-10.

Clare Hall Hospital is now under the control of the Barnet Group Hospital Management Committee.

have you looked at births registered as Morfydd Thomas?

Trudie

Trudie Report 1 Oct 2009 13:39

Yes, thank you, I have that birth Cert - alas not her. I have not looked for her under Morfydd - being naive, I thought that when you get married, you give your proper name - i now know this not to be the case.

Yes the previous thread was mine - I am now banging my head against a brick wall with her. Sadly my mother has passed away and her siblings have no information on her - None, totally bizarre.

Oh my goodness. How did you know the witness's name on the Marriage cert? That is amazing. Would you suggest i get her birth cert? Who might she be - considering she was born in Pontyprid also!!!

I can not thank you enough for your information. Amazing. Atleast I have another lead to follow.

Vicci

Vicci Report 2 Oct 2009 07:39

I got the witness name from your other thread.

It would be worth trying to find out who she was as she may have been a relative, Howell being a Welsh name.

Trudie.

You said she was born 1899 on her death cert and 1904 on her marriage cert.

Was her husband younger than her?
My grandmother knocked 2 years of her age for her marriage so she wasnt older than my granddad

just realized that I had a bit of a brain drain and was looking for father robert and should have been looking for Richard!

Trudie

Trudie Report 2 Oct 2009 16:47

My Grandfather was born in 1903 - he stated me was 26 on the marriage cert and she said she was 27 - which is odd as usually you wouldnt say that you'd be older than your husband to be.
