Don't know about you two, but I'm getting a bit confused here. I'm going to have to sit down and write all this down so I can get a clearer view!!

Good job I like doing jigsaw puzzles!

Hello Catherine, I hope you are good at puzzles because i am useless, got to the stage now that i don't know who i am looking for anymore, i will take a leaf out of your book and write it all down, who knows we may come up with the same conclusion. Here's hoping.

Thank you both for taking an interest and helping me out .

Catherine Report 22 Mar 2009 15:13

Not having much luck finding Agnes's two marriages???

Been thinking!
Maybe the McGregor children, or at least a couple of them, were Agnes' husband James McGregor's children from a first marriage??

So I have the family as this:-
John Mitchell married Ann Ophiland
daughter Agnes born 1822
Agnes married Alexander Stewart (date ?)
Ann Stewart born 1841
Margaret Stewart born 1843
Alexander died (date ?)
Agnes married James McGregor (date ?)
Agnes died 1874.

So Ann and Margaret were more or less brought up by their Grandmother.

Jean Report 22 Mar 2009 15:50

More news, Agnes's second husband was Duncan Mcgregor not James , sorry for the confusion, quite difficult to read on scotlands people, they married 16.12.1849, Barony, Lanark,Scotland, just going back to find Duncan's parents.

So did she marry Alexander Stewart?

If yes, then he must have died between 1842/43 and 1849!

Household Members:

Cathrine Stewart 1

The death register gave Duncan McGregor's occupation, did it not say what her first husband's occupation was?

Catherine

Catherine Report 22 Mar 2009 21:15

On scotlands people, I managed to narrow down a marriage:-

Surname: Mitchell
Forname: Agnes
Spouses name: Alexander
Date: 27 December 1839
County: Lanark
Parish: Biggar (so that might not fit)

and as there are two possibilities in 1841 census it could be the other one???

Hang on, this looks like another one, so maybe.....?

ALEXANDER STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 08 DEC 1839 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
Spouse: AGNES MOIR

Hi Jean

As Agnes Stewart McGregor ms Mitchell died in the City Poorhouse she almost certainly claimed poor relief to get in there at that time. If I didn't work fulltime I would be hot-footing to the Mitchell tomorrow on your behalf!! Alas, these records cannot be access via the internet. The Mitchell has indexed all the names and you then get the reference and they bring the actual books to you to look at. They are a wealth of information as they give not only the parents names but the names and ages of all their children and often the addresses, spouses and the number of children that the children have! They tell you if the parents and children are dead or alive too. They also list all the addresses that the claimant has stayed at.

I still have my doubts that all the grandchildren staying with Margaret Mitchell have the same mother.

I wonder why Agnes left her children with her mother when she was married to Mr McGregor!

Here's the second one in 1851:-
Name: Alexander Stewart
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1816
Relationship: Head
Spouse's Name: Agnes
Gender: Male
Where born: Glasgow, Lanark
Parish Number: 644/1
Civil Parish: Glasgow St John
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 31 Greenvale St
Occupation: Cotton Spinner
ED: 28
Page: 22 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 86
Line: 9
Roll: CSSCT1851_161
Household Members:
Name Age
Alexander Stewart 35
Agnes Stewart 34
James Stewart 13
Cathrine Stewart 11
Marion Stewart 9
Jean Stewart 2
William Stewart 4
Alexander Stewart 1

so must be the first one noted as (occupation Mason)!

Catherine

I think the second census for Alexander is more likely. St Andews Square and Abercromby Stret are spitting distance whereas South Coburg Street is across the river.

Greenvale Street is also near Abercromby Street.

All 3 of these are in the Calton.

Hello rootgather,
Have a look at what I have found, it shows that Duncan and Agnes were all actually living in the same house 2 Stirling Street in 1851!

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 22 Mar 2009 21:36

Hi Catherine

That makes sense. Glasgow city centre was full of Tenements (I live in one that was built in the 1890s) walking distance from the streets you have found on the census. Even in my younger days (50 years ago) families often lived in the same tenement. When a son or daughter got married the mother would "speak to the factor" to get them a vacant property. Before a property became vacant you could have a few generations living in the same flat. As soon as one was vacated the mother would be off to speak to the factor!!

Crikey you two, what can I say you are doing all my hard work for me not that i am complaining mind you.I am going to look at all the info you have just given me Catherine and try and match them up with my notes and get back to you. It certainley looks like they are all together in the 1851 but not the 1861 as the children are living with grandmother @ 4, stirling street.

I'm just pleased it's all become so much clearer, I hate loose ends. If only we could find this marriage for Agnes and Alexander. If you check scotlands people for the one I found could you let us know if it fits?
