Need anything else?

Jean Report 20 Mar 2009 17:01

How much time do you have.lol
I am still looking for a marraige and death for Duncan's brother Alexander Moore, parents the same Henry and Margaret nee stewart d.o.b. 1880 last time i have him is 1881 census, in fact i am looking for marraiges and or deaths for most of Duncan's siblings but with such common names it's costing me a fortune on Scotlands People, but Alexander is causing me most problems.

Hi Catherine, hope you enjoyed your dinner !!!!!
No luck with Alexander I'm afraid , still can't find him on scotlands people, had a look at the one you suggested and another which i thought might just fit with d.o.b. but no luck, Oh well I might leave him for a while and concentrate on some of the others. Did have luck with the death of Margaret nee Stewart, We were all brought up in Kelvin so thought the one you found might be her and it was so thank you for that info.

Good Morning Jean

I thought I would have a look and see if I could find Ann Mitchell in the 1851 census - thought it would be a bit easy as she was born in Dollar. Couldn't find an Ann Mitchell with the right birth year but did find this Margaret. Interestingly all the children living with her are grandchildren and I thought it interesting that one was named Duncan, I wondered if he was named for her husband? Perhaps it would be worth looking for the death of the Ann Mitchell in the 1861 census although I am wondering if her name was Margaret Ann known as Ann?

Name: Margaret Mitchell
Age: 67
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1784
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Dollar, Perthshire
Parish Number: 622
Civil Parish: Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 2 Stirling Street
Occupation: Laundress
ED: 16
Page: 24 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 92
Line: 8
Roll: CSSCT1851_141
Household Members: Name Age
Margaret Mitchell 67
Ann Mitchell 10
Margaret Mitchell 8
Duncan McGregor 10
Elizabeth McGregor 7
Janet McGregor 5

The other thing worth noting is that two of the girls - Ann Mitchell and Margaret Mitchell are the same ages as the Ann Stewart and Margaret Stewart living with the Ann Mitchell in 1861

PS Don't see this Margaret on the 1861 census - although I suppose she may have died between 1851 and 1861

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Mar 2009 12:15

Glad the Margaret death was the correct one! Who registered the death? If it was her husband then you know he was still alive in 1924, if not then it narrows down the search for his death.

Pity about Alexander though.
I'll have another look when I have time.

Interesting what rootgather found, that could really be worth looking into.
If it is the same person, she is under Ann Mitchell in 1861 census, rootgather! (See page one)
It would seem likely that it is the same as in 1861 the address is "4 Stirling Street".

rootgatherer Report 21 Mar 2009 13:02

Sorry Catherine - I didn't think to look at the actual address on the two census records. What a silly billy!! Yes, I do think that this is even more hopeful that the 1851 and 1861 census records are indeed the same family.

In the 1851 census all the grandchildren were born in Glasgow - must go back and see if Margaret / Ann can be found in 1841. I wonder who the parents were of these grandchildren!

Jean

Jean Report 21 Mar 2009 22:37

Hi Catherine and rootgatherer, Sorry for the late reply and thank you both very much for all your hard work. The 1851 and '61 are definatley my family. On Margaret Stewart marraige certificate it shows her mother as Agnes or Ann McGregor formely Stewart. m.s. Mitchell and on the 1851 census there are 3 McGregor children.
Henry Moore died in 1891, his son Duncan signed the death certificate.
Margaret went on to marry Philip Cox in 1893 in Anderston, Glasgow.
Margaret died in 1924 her daughter Leah Wilkie signed her death certificate. I wonder where the McGregor children come from, I'm getting a bit confused and intrigued.
best wishes to you both

rootgatherer Report 22 Mar 2009 08:33

Good Morning Jean

I think what we have here is a great deal of confusion!!!!!!!!!! If Margaret's mother, from the details on the marriage certificate was Agnes / Ann Mitchell who then marries a Mr Stewart and then a Mr. McGregor, then the ages of the children living with grandma are a bit odd. Duncan McGregor is aged 10, yet Margaret Mitchell (your Margaret Stewart?) is aged 8 and of course we have Ann Mitchell who is also aged 10. It doesn't look as if these children had the same mother. I wonder why Margaret was unsure of her mother's given name. Margaret was living with her Grandmother in 1861 surely she would have known her daughter's name at the time of Margaret's marriage! Was Margaret's mother deceased at the time of her marriage? What was her father's name and occupation on the marriage certificate?

If you live in Glasgow, I think a trip to the Mitchell library is called for to have a look at the Poor Relief records. It may be that the Grandmother claimed Relief if she was bringing up these children on her own! Also if Margaret's mother was widowed she too may have claimed relief.

Jean Report 22 Mar 2009 12:55

Hello Rootgatherer, here we are again,

Had another look at the marraige certificate of Margaret Stewart, can't make out the occupation of her father Alexander , it looks like something journeyman (deceased) . Unfortunatley i don't live in Glasgow, do you know if there is anyway i can access poor relief records without visisting the Mitchell Library ? Margaret's mother was still alive at the time of marraige, I think she died in 1874 in Glasgow , but i will have to check .

I have found a death for Agnes Stewart Mcgregor Mitchell.
Died age 58 on 5.12.1874 at the city poorhouse Glasgow. It shows her as Agnes McGregor Pauper, married 1st Alexander Stewart. 2nd. James ? Mcgregor , (housepainter), Parents were John Mitchell (miller) dec. and Ann Mitchell m.s.Oliphant dec. Signed by John McPherson ....... Clerk.

So possibly she would have been on Poor Relief?
