Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 18 Mar 2009 18:47

can anyone help please. I'm looking for a marriage between Walter Stock and Rosina Morton. They are together on the 1901 (n West Ham) census as husband and wife, with 4 children, but separate and single in 1891.

There is no marriage between them shown on Free BMD or FamilySearch or Find my past Parish Records. Can anyone think of anywhere else to look online please?!

Thank you.

Maz

We need more details before we can help you. How are are the couple? The names of the children?

Can you please post the census details you have and then we might be able to help further.

Regards

Ahhh Somerset girl, don't be fooled by the marriage column in the 1911.... i have 3 relatives who stated they were married and for how long, when none of them where.... the length of time for one clashed with the fact he was still married to wife No1 !!!

It's just another column people could lie on.... and quite often they did!!

Thanks for taking an interest ...

Ref for 1901 census is RG13; Piece: 1567; Folio: 143; Page: 54. Rosina is born about 1863 in Great Canfield, Essex
Walter is born about 1860 in (Great) Dunmow, Essex
children are Bertie 9, Mary 7, Reginald 5 and Ernest 2, all born West Ham.

I have them thru on the previous censuses, it's just the marriage that I can't find.

Am helping a friend, won't be getting the 1911 I'm afraid! can't afford the 30 credits.

Thats Funny,

Both names appear to have got Married in 1898 West Ham..

but not to each other....!!

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 18 Mar 2009 19:08

1911 census states 23 years married.

That makes 1888 in my book?

Could Rosina have been married previously?

thank you Tracey, I didn't expect anyone to spend credits on this though! they are both shown as single in 1891 so I don't think a marriage in 1888 is feasible. think they were telling porkie pies.

Marilyn that is so weird - I've found it myself now too!

I am coming more and more to the conclusion that they never married.

Interestingly, the original image on the 1911 has his name overwritten from William to Walter...

Also states 6 children born 5 live, 1 death.

OK Maz, this is a classic error... Ancestry have mistranscribed Rosina, on the image she is very very clearly a Stock and listed as married. It's a very basic error, always check the image to make sure it matches the transcription. Ancestry is very very good at these!!

I will add an amendment now so others behind us do not make the same mistake!
