Hello Tracey,
Mum always said her name was Diane Leslie Macleod, that was the name on her marriage cert. also on he death cert, she died 28th July 1952 in Weymouth Dorset.
I have no other information of Robert Macleod, except mums MC says he was Major Seaforth Highlanders, deceased.
Mother always said she went to live with Aunt Kate in Stornoway, who Aunt Kate was I have no idea, whether she was Roberts relative or related to Mums mother, who I have no knowledge of,.
It sounds feasible to me that she could have made her name up,to my knowledge she made up all sorts of other tales, I wonder what she was trying to hide.
Thank you for you interest.

Where was Hope born please Evelyn?

And no doubt you have told me before, but was there ever mention of siblings for your mum?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 30 Jun 2009 17:32

No mention of siblings, but that does not mean there were none, she was a woman of few words.
Hope was born in Farnham Surrey

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Jun 2009 17:49

Farnham is an army base if my memory serves me correctly.

This I think may be Hopes birth then.

Births Dec 1874 (>99%)
Knight Hope Farnham 2a 104

And there is no marriage in britain showing for her.
Another fibber ?or an overseas marriage.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Jun 2009 17:57

Maybe not her on 1911 then

Deaths Dec 1874 (>99%)
KNIGHT Hope 0 Farnham 2a 66

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 30 Jun 2009 18:06

1873 or thereabouts would be Hopes birth date.the one you have found birth for sadly cannot be her as you say. Vivvienne you do work so hard.
Thank you
Evelyn

Hello Evelyn, you remember me. ;)

I did a search of the 1911 census just out of curiosity and there are something just over a dozen DIANEs. I really think it was a very unusual name at the time and it's as likely as not that this was not her name at birth.

I wondered about this one from a list Vivienne posted on page 8:

16 1904 MACLEOD MHAIRI ISHBEL M F INVERNESS /INVERNESS 098/00 0262

The name Ishbel there is interesting. And the given name might be one that a modern young woman who had left Scotland might abandon.

The geography still eludes me. I suspect that birth is nowhere in our vicinity.

When is the 1911 Scotland census going to be available??

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 30 Jun 2009 19:29

Hello Janey,
Thanks for your interest,
Diane Leslie was supposedly born in Delhi India then lived for a while in Inverness before moving to Stornoway to live with her Aunt Kate.
I guess its quite possible she changed her name.
Kind regards
Evelyn

Joggle the memory, Evelyn, and I'll fall out -- I know the tale well. ;)

I also think the Robert Lockhart Ross MacLeod that Deborah found (on page 11), in the 1891 census and then marrying in 1896 in India, is very interesting.

A military surgeon would have had an officer's rank, I think.

And with a Grieve in the same unit in 1891.

Ishbel MacLeod's husband was Harold Graham Grieve (page 8 in this thread).

Vivienne, you said:

ishbel macleod, daughter of donald and kate macleod,
married ,harold graham grieve ,,,rubber planter..
on 22 /10 1929

I don't know where that came from. Any indication of Harold's parents?

It would be a bit of a remote connection, but all stones are worth turning over.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 30 Jun 2009 20:06

I have not got Harolds parents names but do know his father was a vicar as was Ishbels father.Ishbel and Harold married at Grosenever House, Clynder, Dunbartonshire in 1929.
Ishbel died in 1976 in district Invernesws aged 79 in 1976

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Jun 2009 20:39

Janey...
The grieve/macleod marriage came from SP.

1929 SRI Marriage GRIEVE, HAROLD GRAHAM - MACLEOD, ISHBEL (Statutory Marriages 502/01 0002
Harold{28} was a rubber planter and Ishbel {30}was a "Seed analyst"

Harolds parents are.

James grieve,minister
deceased

Jessie grieve,nee, Henderson-Jardine

And one of the witnesses was a
Malcom D Grieve,,vicar of "Cant read it"

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Jun 2009 21:24

Remote it would be then, because that 1891 John Grieve was of an age to be Harold's father/uncle etc, rather than sibling.

If Harold Grieve was a rubber planter, it was not in the UK!

How interesting that Ishbel had an occupation shown, and that it was a rather highly specialized one.

India or Ceylon (as it then was) maybe, possibly father was a missionary or a military chaplain ...

Submitted record in the IGI for the 1891 John Grieve:

John Andrew MacKenzie Grieve
Birth: 1854 Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Death: 1933
Father: Andrew Grieve
Mother: Louisa Jane Salmond
Marriages:

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Jun 2009 21:28

Ishbels parents were
Donald,minister of tarbat
and mother Kate.

Uncle and aunt of Diane I have always believed

EVELYN
What date and month did your mother celebrate her birthday?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 30 Jun 2009 21:38

Truthfully I do not know but believe June I do not know what date. Like most other things her birthday seemed to change from time to time, in those days we didnt send cards or make a fuss about birthdays.
Somehow I still believe that Ishbel is the right cousin, I really feel that Vivienne found the right one

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Jun 2009 21:49

I know, Vivienne ;) -- the family connection between Diane and Grieve, the Grieve records. Really, I'm up to speed! That's why I gave page numbers for ref, so as not to have the same things going over and over.

Oh, okay, oops - missed the Malaysia bit. ;) Good place for a rubber plantation. Or Singapore.

I edited above to put in the parents for the 1891 John Grieve, just for ref in case any connection does become apparent.

And just for light relief, looking in the IGI for any of that John Grieve's children (looking to see where he spent time), I got this one:
BAGGOT OFFLEY GREIVE (no relation!)

Now who would do that to a baby ...

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Jun 2009 22:11

Far worse than.........
Penny mochine
Tymen mochine
Bambi mochine

Or even a girl child called
ZEBEDEE!!

All products of their parents misspent 60s youths.
And none are mine I might add
