Find Ancestors

I've been helping a fellow researcher trace her g/grandmother, Charlotte Maria Doncaster. She was born Maria Doncaster in Kensington 1879 and married as Charlotte Doncaster in 1902. We've found her in 1881 with her family and orphaned in 1891 but no sign of her in 1901.

She must be badly mistranscribed. Could someone do a blanket search for her please?

Hi Michelle,

The only witness that I know of was a W.H. Doncaster, presumably Maria's brother. The lady that I'm helping has the birth and marriage certs.

I've noticed a C. Maria Anger c1882 showing up but don't have a subscription anymore. Other than that, I can't see anyone who fits. We already know that Alina Doncaster (mistranscribed) is actually Alma Doncaster, a seperate lady.

That looks very good!

Everything fits for her being Charlotte Maria. And also the fact that she isn't with them in 1891 makes it very promising. She was orphaned a few months before the 1891 census and was enrolled in a school at the time.

Can you do a quick check of the 1891 just to eliminate the possibility of a C. Maria Anger being elsewhere?

You're a star for doing this. It would be lovely to find Maria during this lost decade. Dee has everything else for Maria but is missing the 1901 entry for her g/gran.

Like you, I strongly suspect she was taken in by a family and fostered. If it's true, then it's information that Dee would love to confirm.

Was there any siblings?have you followed them through the census records?I did notice an H M Doncaster on the census records although she may have poss married in 1900-wondered if she maybe a connection to the witness?Or was there a brother with the initials H.M?

Was their an address on the marriage cert of 1902 St Marylebone marriage for CM Doncaster?

Here's the family in 1881 as a guide. As you can see, Maria was incorrectly recorded as Eliza (or it was a pet name). Either way, we know for certain that it's Maria. The address and occupation of father match exactly for birth cert and census info, plus Charlotte Maria's marriage cert states father's details the same plus deceased in 1902. There were no Eliza/Elizabeths on freebmd for 1878-1881.

Hi Michelle,

I'll get on to Dee asap about CM's address in 1902. It's possible to do an address search. She may have been there in 1901. Dee's probably sleeping right now but I'll leave her a message.

All the siblings marriages show on freebmd. It's interesting but probably trivial that the eldest sisters married brothers Curd. Funny, the little things we spot.......................lol

I am in England and really tired its 2.38am.Post the info on here when you get it re address and also if an occupation was listed for her on the 1901.Sorry i haven't been able to see her and hope someone over night gets better luck.Another thought as she was orphaned so young...she may well not know where she was born.So she may not even be under Middlesex?

I've got some more info from Dee.

Charlotte Maria was living at 7 Little Church Street, Marylebone in Dec 1902. It's the same address on her childrens birth certs for years after. They must have moved from there by 1911 but were back in Little Church St by 1918 when another daughter was born.

What's interesting is that Charlotte Maria and her husband Walter Jarrett had their first child in June 1901, before they married and Walter's missing from the 1901 census as well.

Family gossip is that Charlotte Maria worked in the Royal Household.

Could someone do an address search of the 1901 for CM's address?
