Missing young men in 1901 often turn up in the Anglo-Boer War. That is from Kevin Asplin's list of men in the Imperial Yeomanry.

The service record would be available at Kew. I can recommend a researcher who did that search for me, if you're interested.

Now, that would have been cutting things very fine for the marriage and birth after that, so it may be unlikely. I'm not seeing him elsewhere either though!

Just to note -- it might well have been when he married that he adopted his father's surname. Having to name a father and all.
