1871 census
High St., Arnold, Nottinghamshire
Samuel Lovett, head, 52, framework knitter, born Notts, Lambley
Evilina, wife, 48, framework knitter, born Notts, Kimberley
Frances Chambers, sister-in-law, 61, seamstress, born kimberley
Emma Law, dau-in-law, single, 19, lace dresser, born Arnold
Louis Law, son-in-law, single, 13, framework knitter, born Arnold
Ellen Dawson, grandau, 5, born derby, Codnor Park
Mary A. Dawson, grandau, 2, born Notts, Basford

Son and dau-in-law here have other meaning of stepson and stepdaughter, they're both single.

I read Emma & Louis' name as Law here although they were transcribed as Lah.

This looks like Grandma Eveline in 1881 but the writing is terrible. Husband's name has been transcribed Hezekiah, I'm not sure that's what it says.

Hezekiah? Lovett, 65, frame work knitter, born Notts, Lamberley?
Eveline, wife, 55, seamstress, born Derbyshire, Kimberley

confusing, thankyou for your help

This is a long shot !!!

I think...

Eveline Lovatt gave birth to Maria Lovatt..she then had 2 children (Ann and Lucy) and either WAS married and was widdowed OR used rhe name Turner, from the children's father.

The fact that she was housekeeper to a Mr Lowe is a red-herring because Eveline Lowe (aged 5 in 1891) is also Eveline Lovatt's child and it may be that
Maria was just lodging at the Lowe's.

You will need to find some birth records to confirm any of this !!

Helen

Helen Report 15 Aug 2008 19:46

But what about the grandmother? or do you think she might not be her grandmother?

Jayne

Jayne Report 15 Aug 2008 19:44

This means that her two children were almost definitely illigitimate, as they share the mothers maiden name and even "if" the chap she is housekeeper to, is the father, there is no way to confirm that !!

He could just be a single man, providing a "disgraced" woman with a home ????

Jayne

Jayne Report 15 Aug 2008 19:42

Think this is the mother

Jayne

Jayne Report 15 Aug 2008 19:36

Helen

Helen Report 15 Aug 2008 19:35

He had two children with the housekeeper?

Jayne

Jayne Report 15 Aug 2008 19:34

Just having a look at 1891

Jayne

Jayne Report 15 Aug 2008 19:33

Maria Turner was housekeeper to Lewis Lowe.

This might be a euphemism (!) as he is definitely unmarried in 1881

Helen

Helen Report 15 Aug 2008 19:29
