William Mathews born c1883 in Leicester. He is the son of Annie Mathews ( nee Kemp) born c1863. -
Father unkown at this point, although in 1891, I found them under the name of Snow! Annie had also been previously known as Fanny Snoad.
Annie's ('Fanny') husband is shown as Walter. in 1891, Fanny was 28 & Walter 38.
Could someone please help me to find any of these in the 1871 & 1881 census - Leicester. Many thanks

Hi Gillian,
Do you subscribe to ancestry as you can contact the person who has made the corrections and there are lots of details.
She says that William was her great grandfather.

Ok, was going to offer to contact her on your behalf.
She says that Annie(Fanny) states born Leicester in 1901 and Middlesex in 1891, very confusing aren't they?

Thank you.
I do believe that Annie came from Middx & not Leicester. Not sure if her name would have been Snow / Snoad ( not sure when she met Walter Snoad). It may be that she was Annie ( or Fanny) Matthews or Kemp I think she was possibly born Annie Kemp.
Can we find Walter Snoad ( Snow ) in the 1871 /1881 census at all please? Probably Leicester. Gill

I would estimate Walter as being born c1853 as in 1891 he is shown as 38yrs old.
Although the finding of a Walter Snoad aged 14 - a groom fits his work background - the age doesnt fit.
I would guess that the Walter you have found in 1861 is more likely to be him. Does it give any / all the family occupations - there may be a clue there? & street address?
thanks again

Cant thank you enough for taking the trouble to look all these up for me.
However, again, the date of birth 1858, doesnt quite fit ( believe that we are looking for d.o.b c1853.)
Would like to know a bit more about the Walter you found in 1861 census if pos. ( sorry.looked again and noticed that you have given this info)
Im so intreagued - can we find this Walter again in 1871 please??? Gill

Sorry, have to go just now. Can't find anything else for Walter at the moment. Don't discard those other census records for Walter as people did lie about their ages in order to be employed. I'm not saying that's what happened but keep an open mind. Be back later.

Thanks Liz
All i do know is that Walters future wife Annie ( or Fanny) had at least three different surnames that she 'used' - shes really a bit of a mystery.

I have read Susan's message on the genforum and she reckons that this is Walter's marriage. She calls her Elizabeth Ravenhill b Herefordshire but I wonder if she was known as Mary on the 1881 census. Clutching at straws I know but she was born in Leominster which is where their daughter Grace was born in 1882.
