If he was born in 1902, would his cert have needed changing to avoid the war? He wouldn't have been 18 until 1920, so wouldn't have been conscripted.

If his cert was changed, I would think it was changed TO 1902 from an earlier date.

Cannot help you with 1901 census look up, findmypast does not have it, hopefully someone else can try to find the family on the 1901 for you.

I think the mother was trying to avoid the first world war, as I know she already had a son die in that
My grandad always told me he was older than everybody thought!
