Victoria - in future, to avoid pointless intermediating, I will ask that anyone I contact reply to you directly (rather than to me), by doing the tree search for the victim or family member in question.

Now don't be thanking me for my 'help'! I'm doin' it for the Trust and the victims and their families. ;)

EvieBeavie Report 15 Mar 2009 04:00

The next step?

I have found a definite match for the child of one of 'my' victims on the 2002-2008 electoral roll. It's the only thing I can find; nothing in trees.

On a boards search, I've found people "nudging" Jean Allen's electoral roll lookup thread (when will people learn to copy and paste URLs???) but I can't find the thread. I know there are a couple of other people with access too.

Can we find 'em and rope 'em into the project?

(I'm trying BT on line, although 192.com doesn't produce a telephone listing for the correct ER location for the name, but BT is down at the moment ...)

... Crap, I'm an idiot. I'd busted my bum finding the marriage and then the child's birth, sent it all to Victoria, and forgotten to search trees for the child. Contacts sent now -- but the Electoral Roll question stands as a possible resource!

I do have another quibble.

I think we should make it clear to the people we contact via GR trees that
**they are welcome to contact the Trust / Anna directly.**

They should not feel that they have to do this via the GR project/people.

I am therefore continuing to add to my outgoing messages, slightly revised from my initial model (and omitted from Victoria's):

-- or, if you prefer, you can contact the Trust directly via its website, or Anna at this email address: ____

We can't expect to control people's contact with the Trust, or expect everyone to divulge personal info to us.

... I'm also wishing the project weren't called Stairway to Heaven, being a good atheist who once again feels kinda excluded in spite of good works. But oh well, we get used to it. ;)

EvieBeavie Report 15 Mar 2009 04:31

Oh drat, and another problem.

People who don't have paid subs can't sent messages, I'm pretty sure -- they can only reply to messages.

If that is the case, this instruction in your model won't work, Victoria:

"Please send a personal message via the thread shown above to the member shown as 'Bethnal Green Tube Disaster 1943' so that you can view the TREE that we have created detailing the victims and relatives that we have been able to identify."

The person contacted will only be able to reply to the message received.

We can inform you, and you can then send them a PM to open the tree, via the match, and they can then reply to you.

Bethnal Green Disaster 1943 Report 15 Mar 2009 06:29

The easiest thing to do is just send me a note with the potential matches eg victim/ relative name and GR member with match then I can send the message to them .

This will give them acces to the tree straight away, they will be in the contacts list and I will send Anna's email address with the message.

That's ok Christine, it was just a thought. We have Len Goodman of ;Strictly Come Dancing' fame sent books to raffle. He is related to Richard Coleman.

Barbara Windsor has offered to make appearance as it's on 'her manor' but has so far been unwell at the given dates.

Boris Johnson offers support, though not financial as yet!

It would be nice to get the memorial built asap as what's left of the survivors are getting old, obviously, it was 66 years ago.

Thanks for your efforts.

I had spotted Len Goodman was born in the area but did not spot a connection.
I am having great difficulty with finding Tarbuck matches. 1 person has 3 Tarbuks born Bethnal Green but much earlier. Cannot track Mrs P Tarbuck.
Could be him in 1901 but mother not P.
I may be able to find descendants of George's possible siblings. would that be any good?

Evie said... I'm also wishing the project weren't called Stairway to Heaven, being a good atheist who once again feels kinda excluded in spite of good works. But oh well, we get used to it. ;)

Sorry Edie, they had to call it something and as it's an inverted set of stairs going skyward I guess it was the best name they could come up with. I don't think the memorial will have the name on it, it will just be to commemorate The Bethnal Green Disaster and have some details then all the names (hence the need for correct spellings, Im pretty sure for example that Mrs. Chumley may well have spelt her name differently).

Actually, if memory serves me correctly, I think Sandra told me that someone said they'd have nothing to do with it because they disliked the name.

I think some folk would rather forget the unhappy experience, they're memories are still so raw. I know my gt.uncle never fully got over it, he always thought if they'd let him back down the stairs he could locate his mum and save her. I'm sure many had the same thoughts when dragged away from their loved ones who'd already died. So sad.

There were a few religions involved and, I would imagine, a few athiests, agnostics and 'I dunnos'. What's great is that we, who are also probably a right mixed bag ourselves, are doing this for them.

Are you tired of reading me tell you all how great you are yet?

Tough if you are.....YOU'RE GREAT, THANK YOU!!

Christine, re.problems finding Tarbucks, remember the families didn't necessarily come from the immediate area.

War displaced some folk. My Gt.Nan was in temporary accommodation at the time because her house, not far away, had been bombed, but others may have come from further afield.

Morning all, checking Lilian French.

EDIT Struggling with Lilian as no given family on CGWC, her death record gives Lily M French, numerous births possible. 1911 census gives 5 pages of French's in the Bethnal Green area. There is also an Alice French who is a civilian death in 1941 but I can see no relationship to this Lilian.

Trying CHARLES MASON
Same with Charles Mason, no family given, difficult to identify on just his name and age.

I have an update on Clara Emery.

It appears the only person to have her in their tree has their details wrong! Typical, they have Clara the daughter dying instead of her mother. I'm just trying to clear some things up with him....and see if he can see his error!
