You say,
"1871-1911 shows James's family -with 1 (currently in question) male 'James bc1876'."

You've mentioned this child before - but if the Bryan/Collins family is the correct one, they HAVE NO SON named James - see the censuses which ErikaH posted on 9th March at 16:39.

Please post the census on which you've found him.

Thank you again.

The last record- re Michael's baptism - his mother's name( Mary) appears to have been mis-transcribed as 'Mrgt' . -it does fit in to be 'Mary'.

(as previously mentioned Michael's daughter Mary Ann was 'niece' visiting my gg/dad George.in 1881.) (so positive record of George & Michael being brothers)

1871 census George & Mary are shown with 'John Henry' 0 age. ('Waterman's Fields' Greenwich/Woolwich). ( His birth was definitely in Aug - so MAY have been born 1870????)

I am currently waiting to hear back from 'Ask a Librarian' NSW State Library - re newspaper death notice for a John Bryan -d 1940 - 79yrs (bc1859) - MAY be Michael's son b Plumstead 1858. (death was in the 'RYERSON INDEX' newspaper death notices)

Thank you again
Valerie.

I have already posted John Henry's birth record - definitely 1871, July-Sept, so it's impossible for him to be on the 1871 census, which was taken on 2 April:

Posting again here:

BRYAN, JOHN HENRY mmn SMALL
GRO Reference: 1871 S Quarter in WOOLWICH Volume 01D Page 842

You say you have George's discharge papers.
What regiment was he in?
If it was the 108th Regt, then I've already posted the 1871 census for them, with no children.

So far, I'm not seeing (on Ancestry) the 1871 you mention with John Henry aged 0 and parents George and Mary, in Woolwich.

Looking at the image of the original 1831 baptism record for Michael Brien, his mother's name is defintely "Margt".

Of course neither I nor anyone else can be sure if that's your Michael or not, without further proof.

Thanks.
I know it's 'my Michael' b Bandon - 1861 shows him b Bandon with wife Ellen and family incl daughter Mary Ann - the 'niece who is shown visiting my ggrandad George in Lambeth 1881 census..
(I'm in contact with Michael's descendant -Peter Bryan -who had a listing on 'GR').

John Henry Bryan (grandad) born Aug - (close to my father's) - some concern now about the year - seems it should be 1872.
Apologies - I wrongfully thought he was on the 1871.

George Bryan was in 108th Foot (No 690)
(previously known as 3rd Madras 1853 -when he joined HEIC - then it became 108th Foot 1861) He was discharged 1868/9 after 17 years in Madras.

Thanks again - Valerie

Apology - my printout/copy 1871 census does only show George & Mary. Very sorry about that.
