A Hugh D Bowman married in 1948 in Wandsworth. Given that it is the only marriage for that name in England/Wales ...

The death record posted earlier shows an HDBowman death 1991 in Herefordshire.
A woman matching the 1948 wife's name was on the electoral roll 2002-2004 (alone) in Ledbury.
Possible: someone with the same name and initial was on the ER 2005-2007 (also alone) in Bingley, and died there in 2007.

Likely birth (and makes sense he would have been named for his father killed earlier that year):

Name Hugh David Bowman
Event Type Birth
Event Date Apr - Jun 1917
Event Place Belfast, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year Apr - Jun 1917
Registration District Belfast
Volume Number 1

his likely father's marriage (man killed in 1917, apparently career military, from 1911 census posted earlier):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FY6D-Z3N

Name Hugh David Bowman
Event Type Marriage
Event Date Jul - Sep 1912
Event Place Belfast, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year Jul - Sep 1912
Registration District Belfast
Volume Number 1

Hugh and Edith had a child in 46 and the birth cert lists the mother as Edith bowman ,so the marriage in 48 is not them.

I had looked at that marriage previously and ruled it out, not just due to the timing but the marriage is to a June Williams.

Although I can't see any children to a Bowman and Williams

Of course I realise it is not them, Anita. I was not suggesting it was!

(Nonetheless, a couple could perfectly well have had children several years before marrying, and the mother could simply have reported her surname as her husband's surname. One set of my grx2 grandparents apparently never married, in spite of having a rather large number of children and recording the mother as formerly-her-birth-name. Ditto another set of my grx2 grandparents, who married several years after having the last of their also numerous children and the mother recording her name as formerly-her-birth-name.)

I posted it because of the possibility that Hugh and Edith were not married, and that he subsequently married.

Since the father's name on the birth cert is clear, and the only possible birth we can find for that father is the one I posted, in 1917 in Belfast, and there is no other record of a Hugh David Bowman apart from the death in 1991 showing a DOB of 1917 ... I thought it a good bet that the man who married in 1948 was the same man. There may have been a divorce, or no marriage to Edith. (Or there is always the fun option of bigamy, which did happen.)

That marriage certificate would tell you whether he reported single or divorced. It would also tell you his age and father's name, which would at least show whether it was the man born in 1917.

Unfortunately, the wife's surname is so common that I can't tell whether it was her birth surname or a previous married surname. I don't have Ancestry access at the moment, but her 2007 death record would show her date of birth so her birth could possibly be identified. (This would be useful for determining whether the couple had children, if she did not marry under her birth surname.)

If someone with access wants to check, the death was 2007 in West Yorkshire.
Edit: born 1924.
Edit again: in June, duh. :-)
And there is a birth reg to match the name she married Bowman under.

Since all of this is about the private lives of the family of people who are probably living (the two men you are searching for) I am trying to be a little discreet. I purposely did not put the name of the 1948 wife for that reason.

What does Edith/Bridget say about her marital status on the cert of the Hooper marriage?

Anita

Anita Report 24 Jan 2018 15:24

That death looks very like it could be stephen unfortunately, I will look into that further.

Edith/Bridget shows her previous marriage as dissolved in her marriage to george!

I will check out those other marriages to too see if there is any children

She would have been asked to provide a copy of the Decree Absolute in that case

Anita Report 24 Jan 2018 15:37

There was 3 stephen Bowmans born in q1 1951, one is stephen p, (mother mcanulty), one in West Morland and one in Romford, so it looks likely that it is our Stephen. That has died unfortunately

I went on the order the death certificate and it says estimated dispatch date 14th February, so that's going to be a long wait.

Going to look for an obituary in the mean time.

The death notice has changed my search to Cleckheation instead of Queensbury now though - so will have a different look in the normal sources!
