I had been concentrating on the other John J birth (Poplar not Marylebone), but was deciding it looked like the wrong family as that John J was still with the same people on ER's after the marriage.

Looks to be correct- the Ellen Fitzgerald (nee Phelan) on the 1939 register matches this birth in Kilkenny:

Have you got your Father's birth certificate for information about his parents?

Susan has sent me a pm saying that her Father was born in London to Irish parents, and had other siblings besides Martin.

As Martin P does not show on the ER until 1953, then he is very likely born around 1932, or was not living in London before then.

If we cannot see him in 1939 census, then still possibly alive, or died relatively recently, or not in the country?

There are several Fitzgerald/Davies births in London, with one or two being possible children, but not immediately after that marriage date.

Grace and Martin are showing on the ER in 1953 in Carlton, so he must have been born before 1932?

So the missing you has the brother as Martin P Fitzgerald.
