Sue, we have a goat, poppy and her sister died about two months ago. Chloe was given a good send off and is buried in the orchard.
I was mum to Parsley a ram, three years ago as he was the last of triplets and was rejected and he followed me everywhere. There was no way that I could eat him after having him in the utility room fighting to save him.
I will be a bit sad seeing the two going tomorrow but when they come back all jointed up, there is nothing like your own meat. I know they had a good life and were well fed so its nots so bad.
Will have at least one to bottle feed this year and that one will either be sold to a friend if a ram as they want to breed or if a ewe will swap with another friend so we have new breeding stock;
Luckily we do not depend on our sheep to make a living and we are able to enjoy the ones we have and let the older ones live out their lives in the orchard.

xx Jill

Val
I saw the news report....A terrble thing to happen.

I remember a time when we first lived here ( I'm not a native of these parts) when farmers lost alot of lambs because of harsh weather. They managed to save some by giving them little foil jackets to wear to keep out the cold and wet.
Rams locally 'go visiting' on November 5th now,so it will be a while before the Romney Marsh is covered with young lambs......a lovely sight as we drive to Sussex.

Lambing days are popular around here. Farms open for the day and visitors can go to watch the new lambs be born.

Hi Jude,

Sheep are 'moon' animals, they come into season when the light levels start to dim, normally between September - November time. They have a gestation period of 147 days.

Marion,

Only had it once and that was many years ago..I have eaten everything that resembled meat that has been put in front of me when on hols.

I tend not to enquire to deeply as to exactly what it might be...lol although I did baulk at a sheep's head once, just ate the cheeks and shuffled the rest around on the plate

Do you like haggis Sue?

Sue

Sue Report 21 Jan 2008 12:29

We bred our own lambs and I wish we could afford to buy the cuts we used to enjoy. We ate everything we bred including goat (which we love)...

The price of lamb is truly shocking...

Moan over...lol

Jude, we only have 10 in all as most of them are pets :))) but ours come into season Oct / Nov and just have the one season.

Sue, one of our rams is called Minty as when we first got him he was for the chop but I couldnt eat anything that had a name; He now lives a lovely life in our fields and has the pick of the ewes :))))

Jill - you are so right about fluffy white sheep - here in Wales so many of them look as if their Mum's do not use Persil

I have 15 ewes that are due to lamb in February, and I have felt so sorry for them in this weather that at the weekend, brought them in to the barn to have a bit of pampering before the due date!!! lol The rest aren't due to lamb until April, so hopefully the sun will be shining then.........

Another farm in the village has quite a few, ours were born early Feb last year. This year we kept the rams away as wanted our lambs born in March, when the weather will be better(I hope)
Ewes will hang on if weather not good but we keep ours in for a few days to give them a good start.
When I see all the newborns I want ours to start :)))))

Ann, the pretty white ones you see on ads, I wonder how much stuff they put on to make them white as all our are quite grey and mukky :)))))
