Don't let it rile you Lyn, each to their own. if your friend can afford to buy the more expensive stuff it is up to her, but it is not up to her to say you are a cheap skate.

We buy the brand we like of the particular thing we are buying. Always buy more expensive coffee as I don't like the cheaper makes. however, I don't like Maxwell House either so i am fussy. Buy own brand baked beans etc, prefer named pasta (i.e.tagliatelle) but our weekly shop is a mix.

Clothes I am as likely to shop in primark as M&S and would buy from charity shops if I ever saw anything I like. The ones in Gloucester always seem to have a load of 'rubbish' though.

Well Las.... as far as I'm concerned, that makes you a very wise woman.

I have always had to watch my pennies, and if that is being a cheapskate.... we would never have managed without my method of shopping.

Great for those who can afford to shop 'high off the hog', but not everyone can.... as in YOU &and ME Lynn.

Liddli,,ditto,

I don't go out especially to buy branded goods or supermarkets own stuff......I have tried them all over the years and buy what I like best....

I must say though that I have a price for something I am going to buy, and will not pay over that price unless it is really special....

*whispers*

Er, did I mention that if I buy designer clothes, they're second-hand?

No?

Ooer, the cat's out of the shopping bag, lol.

But Lynn, I'm the same as you.

And bear in mind that many of the "shop" brands are made by the same company as the "designer" brands.

And I always thought Tesco's £3 jeans were designer ones !

Just had a mooch in the cupboard (think OH got excited and thought I was going to prepare dinner anyway) quick comparrison:

Leading Supermarket own brand baked beans 42p

per 100g

Calories 90
Fat 0.8g
Salt 1.2g
Sugar 7.1g

Aldi Baked Beans 16p

per 100g

Calories 86
Fat 0.4g
Salt 0.75g
Sugar 5.6g

and many products are similar in values - so expensive is not perhaps always the best

l buy at all sorts - depends what l want. Bought a great pair of pj's from Asda before xmas £6 and l had been looking everywhere, as in m & s, gap, next etc we have a new Lidl's round the corner one or two things we bought lately l did'nt like, but it won't stop me going again, ususally shop in Somerfield though.

l always used to say that m & s last longer, but l think other makes last fairly well as now - but some can be rubbish:o))

Colin my OH would only ever have Sarson's vinegar. It was 20 years before I told him I'd been filling the same Sarson's bottle up with own brand.

I buy whatever's on offer!!
Sometimes the own label stuff is much nicer - less additives keeps it cheaper and tasting more 'real'.

There are some brand names I prefer...like McVities Digestives, or Tetley tea, though Sainsburys red label is good enough. But generally, own brand goods are just as good. You mostly pay for the name anyway.

There was a Programme on TV recently about various brands versus own brands,it seems the Own brands were better(Healthier) for you and much cheaper to boot
