Ive been going to Fuertaventura for almost 15 years (am thinking of buying a place there). Its lovely all year round. There are only two high rise hotels on the whole island. The crime rate is low and its a great place for adults and children alike.

I personally Favour Corellejo - but with children you may want one of the bigger places in Caleta De Fuste. If you want to know anything about the island feel free to PM me - theres not many places I havent stayed.

Oh and my English smokes cost 9 euros for 200!!! Thats about £7.20 its cheap to eat out and if you go to some of the locals places rather than the tourists you can get fantastic Tapas and fresh fish.

We went to Maspalomas in Gran Canaria a couple of years ago. It was a nice place but not much doing really, especially for the kids. We usually go to Tenerife and stay at the coste adeje end of las americas. There are some nice hotels and apartments there. An hour or so away in puerto de la cruz you can go to Loro Parque for the day, the kids love it there. It's like a big zoo with tigers, aligators etc... and they do some fantastic shows. There's the sealions, dolphins, parrots and a fab killer whale show.

you will of course get different from everyone Catherine. it depends what you are looking for. Tenerife South has a good beach for children at Los Cristianos and Las Americas. Lanzarote, we like Costa Teguise which has an excellent beach for children. Also depends when you are looking to go. Sometimes Tenerife is warmer than Lanzarote and sometimes Tenerife and Grand canaria re going to be wetter than Lanzarote. lanzarote and Fuerteventura can both be windy.

If you have kids, get one with a kids club. Or if you decide on all inclusive check that out too.

Been on 2 exclusives.Be cheaper self catering. The food is the same everday at lunchtime and repeated in the evening every few days. The drink is very cheap and watered down.We ended up going out in the evenings Annie

Thought you meant our footie team for a mo lol!

Take a look at TripAdvisor Catherine, there are some reviews there for where ever you chose.
I went to Fuerterventura a few years ago, o.h's first foreign holiday.
I stayed in an urbanisation which wasn't very good, but spent a lot of time at Calete de Fusta which has a new name now, and it is a manmade beach, with camels for rides and nice enough beach for little ones. I loved Corralejo tho, lots of shops, eating places and if you jump on a bus, easy to use the buses all over the island, you can go to the big beach there which on one side of the road is just deserted sand dunes, great to tire the kids out running up and down lol, and the sea side is lovely too, lots of kite flying and such, but you might come across lots of topless ladies and even nudes as it is free and easy there. I think most of the beaches in the Canaries have nudist areas so do check first. You can get trips across to Lanzarote to the Timanfaya national park which is where the Planet of the Apes was filmed and very moonscapey, and you can see twigs catching fire from the underground heat rising from a certain point, all very safe but fascinating done by the guides etc. We did a trip round the island of F. and saw goats cheese being made, the children can pet the goats and the cats around the farm. Plenty to do and was sunny when we were there in November time, food is ok too.
Watch out with Tenerife, as there is one side of the island which is in shade a bit from the volcano I think, most of the sand is black rather than sand coloured lol
If you go to a travel agent, ask to see the book they have telling the truth about the place they are trying to send you to, no bumph like the brochures.

Thank you everyone for your kind replies-I have always wanted to go to Fuerteventura I seen the brochures and the long sandy beaches and they look heaven-the wind though puts me off a bit-I'm basically after an island that's prob not as touristy as say tenerife, but will have nice beaches for the kids, the place we stay at will have to have a kids club, cos the biggest part of this holiday will be the kids and not just mine and OH's needs. The place just needs to have some nice restraunts and shops not too lively or big-no nightclubs or out. so as I have never been I don't know which island is best.
cheers

Catherine, there is a website devoted purely to F, called Fuerterventura*com - take a look, there is also F forum and another called Holiday-truths*com

Jandia, pronounced Handia, has beautiful beaches apparently but not easy to get to by bus.

Do you teach your children some Spanish before you go? words for please and thank you, hallo etc - it goes down well with staff at the resorts.

Costa Teguise Lanzarote, has a lot of self catering accommodation most have kids clubs. as somebody said, look at Trip adviser. When are you thinking of going?

Sands beach villas is good for kids, there are 6 pools and a lake, the kids can learn to windsurf on the lake. The lake has its own beach but not very big but there is only a five minute walk from a man made (yellow/white sand) beach with safe bathing for the kids. Loads of restaurants. Chinese, Italian, Spanish, English, Mexican.

Sorry, don't like Puerto Del carmen, too many 'English' type bars, noisy.

If you have a car for the week plenty to see round the Island.

I wouldnt worry too much about the wind at Feurtaventa - its mainly in the evenings you notice it and a light jacket will suffice. Just be extra careful with sun lotion in the day - the wind is nice and cooling in the day, but tourists often forget its a lot hotter than it feels because of the wind. I am fair skinned and use P20 over there - its a bit more pricey than say your boots or superdrug sun lotion but you put it on just once a day (its more like alcohol in appearance) and you can swim as often as you like without reapplying.

Just make sure you have packed a fleece for late nights its a wonderful island and caters very well for adults and children.

If your down the Correjeco end you can catch the ferry or one of many boats for a day trip to Landzerote too :)
