Errol, it just came to me - are these in fact similes? (Are euphemisms when you say things like "he was killed by friendly fire" rather than "he was shot by someone on his own side", for instance?)

We do say 'daft as a brush' round here but it's more to do with kids being silly rather than lack of intellegence.
