I doubt that this will ever be solved while this country is so PC. I guess the children that carry them into school are the ones with parents who either don't care and are too lazy to do anything about it, or who are not the brightest and don't know that treatment has to be continual. Obviously the parents need to be targeted, but if the schools do this they will claim victimisation. So, those of you who care will continue to suffer the inconvenience

Wash the childs hair, rinse, no conditioner, then use a diluted solution of white vinegar and rinse hair with this, but do not use conditioner until the next wash. Know it sounds daft, but believe me, it works. No more nits.

The expressoin feeling lousey comes from how we feel when we get nits ect, so how can the kids concentrate at school when they are irritated by nits?

Thanks everyone. There's some great advice here. I'll give it all a go. I've had enough of this I really have.

We did ask the headmaster for help with this and in return we were given a rubbish plastic nit comb !!!

I really think we should go back to the way it was when I was a kid. It worked in those days and I really can't see why it shouldn't work again. No one was teased or upset if they were sent home due to nits. In fact if anything those that weren't sent home were jealous of those that were as I recall !!! lol.xx

I'll second Vods vinegar method, thats what my OH did with his sons hair, just a vinegar rinse, job done. The acetic acid kills em.

When my daughter was at school they would send out a letter to all parents of class/year/school (depending on infestation) - that way we knew to look out for them and nip them in the bud.

I hate using chemicals and so used an organic conditioner, applied thickly on the hair and then combed thru with a nit comb - best done over something white so you can see the blighters, then washed out the remaining conditioner. This done regularly over a 2 week period cleared them up.

Muffy

you have my every sympathy.. had same problem when my duaghter attended primary school. Every week without fail she'd bring them home. Like you was a one certain family that simply didn't bother, we had the letter sent out warning us and we watched the child give the letter to the mother. She glanced at it realised what it was and screwed it up. We went the hair up ( iknow youcan't) and condioner and comb every second night. Finally stamped it out that way. Must add since she's been to high school, she's not had them once.

Three boys are much easier..... we simply cut their hair short!!! Tho none of the boys have suffered as much as duaghter did, tho one of the nitty family was in the twins yr. They seemed immune!!!!

My 2 yea old grand-daughter has just started nursery and she's already picked the nasty blighters up. We mentioned it to one of the teachers and we're told " we're not allowed to send letters home anymore, in case the parents are offended" what;s that all about?
To get treatments from the health centre, you have to take some of the lice to proof that you need treatment!!!!!!
I can remember my daughter being excluded from school until she was clean, and she had to be checked by the school nurse before she was allowed back in.

Bring back the "nit nurse" maybe we should start a campaign
